There's probably something to be said for having restraint and restrictions. I get that these are family games mostly meant for kids and competing against mobile games that will grant immediate satisfaction, but I do think maybe having less choice, less openness would be good.

i think MKW ironically needed a little less world, too. like make the distance between tracks a little shorter, or add more tracks in-between. open-world mario kart feels a little too broad.

i also think the "emptiness" of mario kart world comes from lacking the decade of updates that mario kart 8 dx got, too. just a very odd feeling of getting a good mario sports title and a reset racing title.
