I haven’t read it, but I know Howard Chiang’s first book was about eunuchs and the transformation of gender ideology as China entered the modern era. Maybe he’d be a good person to suggest who to work with? He also worked on transness substantially in the second book.

With this excellent new piece from Michael Berry, I now have a perfect two week mini unit on Jia Zhangke bridging Bazin and AI cinema for my fall media class. My students are always smarter than me when we talk about this. Curious what they will say.

Welcome to Minnesota!
Profile painting of Eve surrounded by abstract representations of the Adam and Eve tale, as well as icons of Atlantic slavery
This painting of Eve by Harmonia Rosales, displayed alongside medieval illuminated books depicting creation, was my favorite thing at the Getty this trip
Painting of a grotto
I look this painting of a grotto in France, and all I see is something from the east coast of Taiwan (by Gustave Courbet)

Still life painting of a porcelain tea set with a clumsy orientalist painting
Can an art historian tell me if this is supposed to be funny? 1780s, Swiss painter
Oops, “paint,” not “pant”
Meticulous, brilliant, and thought provoking art by Dyani White Hawk at the Walker Art Center right now. She weaves with pant and paints in weaving.
TIL that college students still watch and pass around old Vines fondly. I had no idea! (And also…Vine might be back?) But I guess they were teens/tweens before it died the first time…
I have also been seeing tributes around my various timelines. Rest in Power.
Same here, but stricken in week 11 🤦🏻♀️
For anyone who’s afraid to click—it’s just a Matisse painting with dancing figures, but I guess they’re technically nude 😅
A little bunny sleeping next to a large canvas at the MOMA
This Kandinsky was one of my favorite finds at the Guggenheim today. Like of course this is how K does a landscape!
I like how some of them are manually expressing milk
Honorable mentions (all from Divine Egypt exhibit). Includes one Hippo goddess of pregnancy.
Turquoise color ancient Egyptian figure of a woman breastfeeding

Never heard of Red White and Tuna!
Promotional image for the film "Hero." Pictures An Jung-geun, the protagonist of the film, assassinating a Japanese military official.
Looking for suggestions: I was going to show *Hero* (2022, S. Korea) for a class session on musicals, powerful affect, and national(ist) narrative, but my DVD order is delayed. Any suggestions for alternates? Could be a film from anywhere. Must be a musical.
Where is this? It reminds me of Colorado.
Also, my two kids who are 10-20 years younger than these students are crrrrrazzzy about the movie and the music. The buzz among parents I know is all about how it’s going to take over Halloween costumes this year. Is there just a mini generation gap between Z and Alpha that I’m finding?
Screen grab of Rumi from Kpop Demon Hunters making a “blah” face. Also what some of my students looked like by the end of the movie.
Wow I just watched Kpop Demon Hunters with a bunch of college juniors and seniors and…they were not only blah, but they also know less about it than I do. Do I just have very specific students who are incredibly sheltered from the reaches of the honmoon??
Toddler’s current favorite meal: fufu (tofu) and fanfan (飯飯;rice)
My daughter’s latest. She calls it “The Breakfast.”
Soda Pop is literally #2 on my toddler’s playlist under Baby Shark and above Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes 😂 Possibly it’s topping charts because a lot of parents now have it on endless repeat?
Maybe a novel, like a monograph, is just more prestigious of an achievement for a single Author.
“…Our laughter outpaced what we know of the world, for a few seconds at a time.” On laughter, shared utopian vision opened up by a joke, and a small flash of light in the dark.
Yeah that’s the challenge nowadays…getting undergrads to read in a sustained way (without AI assistance XDD)
