It finally snowed on our mountains. That's a nice change from skiing on ice.

There was about 100 km/h of wind over the Alps the other day. I went for a wave flight with Gab Bfe from Chambéry in France to Bolzano in Italy in his Stemme glider (About 800kms out and back). If you are interested in doing this yourself check out Gabriel's website www.soaring-adventures.eu
While Unsigned Distance Fields (UDFs), unlike Signed Distance Fields (SDFs), can naturally represent open surfaces, turning them into triangulated surfaces them is challenging. In a paper to appear in NeurIPs, we propose an effective iterative refinement approach. arxiv.org/abs/2407.18381 #ai
Sailing to Ven Island near Copenhagen with Anders and Vedrana.
Reconstructed Viking ships in Roskilde, Denmark. Wonderful on a nice September day in port. Might have been a different story in Winter in the North Sea!
Traditional bonfire on August 1st, the Swiss National day, with Nancy for scale. Note that that there are no barriers and that can walk as close to the fire as you dare. Not something you would see in the US these days, I think.
Trying to understand how the steam engine of an early locomotive works at the York train museum. It took us a while but I think we gained a better understanding of practical thermodynamics.
The final version of our SIGGRAPH paper on 3D reconstruction of loose fitting garments from single images is now available on the ACM website dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/... . #deeplearning #computervision #GenerativeAI
While visiting friends near Sheffield, we stumbled upon Pemberley, aka Chatsworth house. Alas, Mr. Darcy was not in residence at the time. Nevertheless, It was worth seeing with our own eyes how vast such an estate is. You don't get a sense of that from the books or the movies.
Low pass.
Marco's "beast" on the ground
Marco's "beast" in the air.
In the context for my new aeronautics-related project, we are going to need some flight data to train our ML algorithms. And it needs to be acquired at a reasonable cost. So, we strapped a small GPS on a model plane and went flying. It seems to work nicely. Necessity is the mother of invention!
We released a large multi-view people-tracking dataset. We used 25 partially overlapping cameras placed over more than 400 meters. We acquired 24'000 images per camera, with full calibration data. scout.epfl.ch #VideoSurveillance #PeopleTracking #ComputerVision
The same place seen from the ground. Switzerland is beautiful!
Flying to and from Mt Pilatus on Saturday.
In an upcoming MICCAI paper, we model the heart as interdependent SDFs representing a distinct anatomical component. By enforcing proper contact between adjacent ones, we ensure that they define anatomically and topologically correct structures. arxiv.org/abs/2307.08716
In a paper to appear at ICCV, we show how to count stacked objects such as those shown below, even though only those at the top are visible. Our key insight is that this suffices to estimate the number of objects per unit of volume. corentindumery.github.io/projects/sta...
In paper to appear in MICCAI, we propose a method that “GenAI-fies” atlas-based segmentation by training a diffusion model to learn the joint distribution of images and segmentation masks. arxiv.org/abs/2503.06748
SCIA 2025 keynote on Deep Shape Design @pvfua.bsky.social

To refresh our ideas before the conference, we went snorkeling in 3C amazingly clear water. With enough layers under our dry suits, we weren't cold. Putting one's head in the water is unpleasant initially but that passes quickly.
I have been invited to give a keynote at SCIA'05 and we took advantage of that to tour Iceland. The midnight sun yesterday night was spectacular! I highly recommend it.
Our paper written in collaboration with MBZUAI on modeling loose-fitting garments will be presented at SIGGRAPH. Crucially, we used guided diffusion models to synthesize the invisible parts while accurately modeling visible ones. arxiv.org/abs/2504.08353 #DeepLearning #Fashion
And today, @nancysuisse.bsky.social saw this beast parked at the glider field. Some people came IN STYLE for demonstration glider flights!
First flight of the season in the Alps. Matterhorn is hiding in the clouds a few kilometers ahead.
Supervised learning methods often assume that training and test data come from the same distribution. In a paper to appear in ICML, we show we can use idempotence to handle distribution shifts on-the-fly, without access to any additional labeled data. arxiv.org/pdf/2410.04201
Poster seen at the Lausanne train station. It advertises the fact that health-plans from “Groupe Mutuel” cover contraception. I can’t imagine seeing anything quite as explicit in a US public place.
Lab outing at the local Archery Center. I imagine some of us were thinking about Reviewer #2. It helps with accuracy ;-)
Newlywed and his Dad on the slopes for the last day of the season.
