Many people seem shocked that a committed writer would prefer the time and opportunity simply to write rather than the blandishments of those bestowing recognition and prize money. DeWitt's case helps us disentangle the art from the machinery.

Everyone who loves words should be acquainted with Gilbert Sorrentino, one of the smartest, funniest, most acerbic, and most criminally under-appreciated American writers.
Looking forward to reading Daniel Green’s book!

"The subtitle of this book promises an “introduction” to Sorrentino’s work, but it is really more accurately an attempt to re-introduce a writer whose work arguably most purely embodies the practice of “experimental fiction” in postwar American writing." www.unbeatenpaths.net/p/prologue-t...

To say that art should not be political is not at all "jaw-dropping." It may or may not be correct, but some artists have been saying it forever. To say that art must be political is jaw-dropping. www.theguardian.com/film/2026/fe...
it’d been a few yrs since the show had produced new eps., but 1) bookworm was a truly important, mass media venue for in-depth discussion abt books, presided over by Silverblatt’s incredible spirit; 2) tho it sounds hyperbolic, his death may seem to mark the end of an era in USA (broadcast bk media)

I get the feeling that I am being incessantly urged -- almost bullied -- to read George Saunders' VIGIL because, you know, he's a really good person. That's as may be, but I do not find it a persuasive literary argument. It's a category error.
I liked his early stories before he became a saint.
"Sorrentino would like us to take delight in the formal variations he offers in each of his novels. In this sense, Sorrentino’s fiction has an affirmative purpose, but it is an affirmation of the capacity of art to renew itself through the exercise of imagination." readexperience.net/2026/01/31/p...
