No, misogyny isn't a thing of the past If it feels like feminism has achieved its goals, you’re not paying enough attention.

*NEW POST*

This week on rising misogyny & classical music

"Not taking active steps to redress historical imbalance sends a message ... that classical music is a space where varying degrees of sexism and misogyny are tolerated."

The guarded language being used regarding cops purposely shooting at journalists is only strange if you're very very stupid.

Entirely this: I’d add that being serious about climate change is a hygiene factor for many voters. In not a single UK constituency does concern about climate drop below 50% - hitting 68% in Clacton. There’s a debate on the ‘how’ and particularly how to do it fairly but much less on the principle.

To be clear, the centre ground on net zero is that the public are broadly supportive - even if there is some conditionality to that support.

The idea that net zero is a source of significant electoral discomfort for Labour is a zombie political fact.

Following the Supreme Court decision, if you are excluding trans people you are choosing to do so. You do not HAVE to, you are doing it because you WANT to. You are not defining trans people, you are telling the world who YOU are.

My view: The “interim update” from the EHRC, and doubtless the actual “guidance” when it is produced, will try and obscure the fact that any exclusion of trans people is not compulsory, it is a choice. If anyone is excluding trans people from anywhere they are choosing to be transphobic, they…

The argument that actually punishing Le Pen and her cronies for their crimes will only make them stronger in the long run is a little hard to swallow when we have a prominent example of a right-wing authoritarian who was very much not punished for his crimes and is now wrecking everything in sight.

the U.S. government is targeting legal noncitizen scholars, not on the basis of any wrongdoing, but as part of a larger assault against an educated public.

"I'm alive!" said Gatsby, roaring past on a speedboat. He'd faked his own death and gotten away with everything. That's why they called him the Great Gatsby. "Out of the way, current!" he yelled at the water. "This speedboat is bearing me ceaselessly into the future!"

Every time I read The Great Gatsby, the final paragraph brings me to tears. Breathtakingly powerful writing:

the fact that none of these ai dorks seem to realize that humans are capable of thought or introspection—perhaps implying they cannot do this themselves—does kind of explain a lot

British journalism is so cursed

1 year ago 1 0 0 0

Large Cultural Institutions — such as opera companies — want to support innovation in ways that do not challenge their primacy. As long as "opera" can be definitionally limited to things that only opera companies can do, they are relevant and superior. Open the gates too wide and the game is over.

Yeah it’s definitely even more explicitly classed in the US given that under 1% of pupils go to private school; but I think because the figure is somewhere between 7 and 12% in the UK they manage to be a much bigger and more detrimental part of the national conversation and policy planning

the incoming government has tried to do one very minor policy to begin to redress this imbalance away from private schools and the amount of weeping and gnashing of teeth with which it has been met is absolutely astounding
