Replacing human moderators with ai is glossing over the real issue here: toxic content comes from a systemic disinvestment in care, equity, and fairness. Traumatizing humans or using ineffectual ai just kicks the can down the road. Not news.
White text to the left reads "Rethinking 'creepy' technology". There are black and white images of Nassim Parvin and Neda Atanasoski on the right hand side. The background is a pink and purple starry galaxy.

I wrote a tribute to Dr. Jonathan Sterne, who passed away this March way too young, in Sounding Out! โ a venue heโd published in, and which felt right for it. I owe him a deep debt intellectually and personally, and he was frankly a great person.

"What is a woman? We donโt know yet. We might never have a conclusive answer. ... We know too much about what power would impose upon her and still too little about who she could become if she was free" -McKenzie @mckenziewark.bsky.social reviews ENEMY FEMINISMS โค๏ธโ๐ฅ www.liberreview.com/enemy-femini...
For ๐๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ณ ๐๐ฉ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ๐ด, the problem is "poornography" - a representational politics of poverty. For ๐๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ณ๐ฆ๐ข๐ต๐ฆ๐ด๐ต ๐ฐ๐ง ๐ข๐ญ๐ญ ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ถ๐ฆ๐ด, it is the silence of a philosophical discussion of inequality and "sufficientarianism." Both books are carefully researched and - importantly - deeply provocative.

They are oppositional at first glance. The books take up two issuesโpoverty and inequalityโand explain how one is overemphasized over the other. The fact that Iโm convinced by the importance of both, however, suggests how these two issues remain oversimplified.

If you have time this summer, I recommend reading Lennard J. Davisโs ๐๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ณ ๐๐ฉ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ๐ด and David L. Williamsโs ๐๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ณ๐ฆ๐ข๐ต๐ฆ๐ด๐ต ๐ฐ๐ง ๐ข๐ญ๐ญ ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ถ๐ฆ๐ด together.
