The live-action One Piece series left in a very complicated state after I watched it last. It was fun revisiting the East Blue saga in a new way, but the changes and characterization bothered me a lot. The showrunners clearly had a love for the series, but mostly retained the shallower elements while the more complex emotional and social aspects were left behind. It ended up being a season I didn't really wish to revisit. Season 2 follows suit, but tries harder to be its own take on the series instead of vehemontly following the manga to the letter. The changes made were still glorified fanservice for the long-term One Piece readers, but still weren't distracting enough to scare away the live-action only watchers. I still find the cast charming, and doing their best to offer a new take on the popular characters, but it still does come off as fans awkwardly making fun of the original text and being too tongue-in-cheek to take itself seriously while ALSO trying to make itself be taken seriously. Sadly, one of the worst aspects of adapting a larger-than-life series like One Piece is still here: Try as they might, it's still very blatant when sets need to be used/reused to save on money. The most obvious being many outdoor scenes in the original manga now being set inside of buildings. But...let's forget the original manga for now. How does this season perform as a piece of entertainment on its own? It's fun. It's easy to be caught up in the silliness of One Piece, and still care for these characters. That's how many people get introduced to One Piece. But even when give that handicap, the series still feels like the team misunderstands the spirit of One Piece and why so many people appreciate its nuanced stories. Ultimately, Season 2 was a fun ride. I just can't find much to sink my teeth into compared to the work it's based on. 7/10
