It’s funny, we never get those anguished “but how will I explain this to my child?” posts when it’s armed goons violently snatching people off the street.

They save that for the real horrors, like someone having two dads.

People with Trans Parents: As part of COLAGE’s People with Trans Parents Kids Group, we created this guide about what it’s like to have a trans parent and what we want you to know! If you have any further questions, contact ptpsupport@colage.org. What is a P T P? A P T P is a person with a trans parent! Our parents may feel as though they are male, female, both, or neither, and this might not match what they were assigned at birth. What do we love about being P T P? We call our parents lots of different things! Daddy, Baba, Mem, Papa, Mom, Mommy, Maddy, Mapa. We do lots of fun things with our parents! Riding bikes / going on trips. Playing Mario Kart / other video games. Going to pride! Knowing our families will always accept us! What are the challenges of being P T P? Transphobia in public - it can feel scary to go outside. Our parents facing transphobia at work/losing a job. Figuring out who is safe to come out to at school. Coming out to extended family - grandparents who may not get it. Feeling alone sometimes. What we want non-p t p to know: You shouldn't make assumptions about people's identity or gender. Ask "what are your pronouns?" Teachers: Put LGBTQ+ flags up in your classroom! But also know that our community is about more than just a flag. Talk about LGBTQ+ issues in class - have a specific class on it! Bring in guest speakers who are trans. Learn about the LGBTQ+ community - trainings on trans rights. Recognizing Trans Visibility Day! Having a GSA or other clubs. When we say: I have a trans parent: say That's cool! I support that! Thanks for sharing that with me! L G B T Q + Laws. We can advocate to change unfair laws. People who have trans parents and people who don't can share their stories and create change! Listen to us! We are all experts on what it's like to be in our families. Trust us when we say something is bothering us.
