American exceptionalism is remarkably strong and extends to individuals. There are so many not-yet-laid-off profs at my old school trying to convince themselves there was something wrong with the cut departments, some version of 'they deserved it.'

Museum guards stage protest outside de Young during gala over safety concerns De Young security guards protested staffing cuts outside the museum’s annual gala, warning that reduced overnight coverage could threaten safety.

"Nine lawsuits have been filed by guards since 2016, and the City and County of San Francisco — which with the Corporation of Fine Arts Museums manages both the de Young and the Legion of Honor — has reportedly paid more than $1 million to settle seven of those cases." [gift link]

I’m an Oakland high school teacher. I discourage my students from using AI OPINION: Generative AI erodes our independence as individuals and as humans in community. It is incompatible with the work of the classroom teacher, Lara Trale writes.

Be human; use your brain.

I love watching a cat go to town on the back of a scholar's chair as he tries to pay attention to a Zoom lecture on medieval manuscripts. From the smiles on everybody else's faces, I think we're all looking at the same thing.

Today I realized my form of sports — the thrill, the live action, the wondering what will happen next — is listening to art auctions. Loving the internet today.

I personally am more comfortable talking to a person I know rather than letting Sam Altman have access to all my thoughts. It's an illusion of privacy.

Sadly, I think a lot of ChatGPT queries of that nature are to avoid wondering what the answer's motivation might be. People aren't generally aware of how it's programmed to flatter. Also, to avoid vulnerability embarrassment.

I interviewed for a fellowship, which had to be mentored by a single prof. He invited me to his hotel room. Prof writting me a letter of rec, 1-1 restaurant meetings to him driving me home. Later, interviews for faculty positions, conducted in hotel rooms. Was I not supposed to have a job, a career?

Just to give a sense of the insane scale of billions of dollars…MacKenzie Scott got about $38 billion after divorcing Bezos in 2019. She has become the world’s most generous philanthropist, giving away over $19 billion…and she’s currently wealthier than she started.

That’s true and Ms. Frazzled’s contributions made the whole thing possible. I should have said. But for the story to land with impact, it needed the resources of a full newsroom. SFC should be better funded so they can hire Frazzled and also give reporters more time to pursue big complex stories

Swalwell ends governor campaign after Chronicle investigation into sexual assault allegations Rep. Eric Swalwell ended his campaign for governor two days after the Chronicle reported allegations he sexually assaulted a former staffer and CNN reported additional allegations.

Swalwell is done because of the excellent reporting of the @sfchronicle.com. That story must have taken a huge amount of time and considerable resources to compile and lawsuit-proof. Newspapers have their shortcomings, but this one just saved the whole state of California. Subscribe. [gift article]
