I never saw this as them merging, but that the close up of Max reveals the remains of a human who has always been inside there and - extra horror - is now doomed to stand on that rock for the rest of time without power to move.

Great stuff! Disney wants in on Star Wars’s success but gives us a full-on space horror movie. The only disappointment: the awkward ‘action adventure’ sequences toward the end which are clearly shoehorned in ‘for the kids’ but are out of whack with the rest of the movie.
