nobuo uematsu is possibly the most famous and well acclaimed video game composer of all time. indisputably he's in the top 3. and i'm gonnna say it: he's probably still underrated
Should we have ordered from somewhere else?
Today's Polygon Exit interview is with @thesaintoftous.bsky.social , who was an absolute joy to work with on the curation team. Toussaint's passion is contagious, and I feel lucky to have worked with him! pvguide.substack.com/p/polygon-ex...
Peep mama’s too if you haven’t
Our weird spiritual scifi tactics game hit at a weird time in the market and, despite having a fully custom 30 hour strategy game campaign, still largely seems to have flown under the radar.
We poured ourselves into this game and I still think it rips.

I'm participating in call to boycott of Microsoft and will not be reviewing Doom: The Dark Ages or any future Xbox title while Microsoft continues to provide technology to the Israeli military and retaliate against its own employees for protesting its actions. bdsmovement.net/microsoft
Some would say this was one of the best games of 2024.
I am some.
another big update from me! i've been sitting on this for a week, unsure of how to write this up.. but i've gotten the total cost for my top surgery, which is $19.6k. i can't raise this money alone, even with all of the work i do, so i've made a gofundme. gofund.me/954d116c
We gotta run this dude outta town

Yeah I was not a fan of this section at all lol
i spent most of my december putting this together. it's a massive collaborative effort, and it features some of the best writing i've seen all year. a great encapsulation not only of 2024, but everything around it, past and future. 102 writers who, despite everything, are still here.
1. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Till the day that we meet again, I'll be typing and deleting my endlessly evolving thoughts and feelings on this game.
Looking ahead to 2025, I want to offer my thanks to everyone that made 2024 another one worth being around for, despite all the sorrow and hardship!
2. Indika
It's a character study - it's right there in the name. So many of its flourishes should not work - pixel art, electronic music, points?? - and yet they come together to solidify Indika as a person In Ways Only Games Can. Loved its surrealist, magical fiction bent toward the end, too.
3. 1000xRESIST
Revisited the first half hour of this last night to confirm how well it holds up.
An outstanding work. I walked away thinking it was a bit too long - the notes you don't play and all that. But my lord, the presentation does so much to bring this thing home. And that *music*.
4. Threshold
Let the bodies hit the floor.
5. Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree
Those vistas, dude. Like *what*
Every time I finish a FromSoft game, I proclaim I'm done with their formula. But if they keep making games this atmospherically rich, I'll probably never stop.
6. Mouthwashing
Too long, and its back-half gimmicks (puzzles? shooter sequence???) muck up its themes. But Mouthwashing is positively dripping with atmosphere in ways few other games can manage. Every scene change had me on the edge of my seat. Curious to see what this dev does next!
7. Balatro
When I sat down with Balatro's demo back in January, I knew it was special. I could never have anticipated what it would become for so many.
Balatro did not entice me to keep going much past my first clear; too sparse for my liking. But *getting* that first clear? *chef's kiss*
8. Metaphor: ReFantazio
Another one I've yet to finish. I think almost every aspect of this is incredibly overrated (writing, music, aesthetic, characters, etc.) But its calendar loop and combat have their hooks in me. I just wish it weren't so verbose for how little of import it has to say.
9. Judero
Admittedly, I did not finish this. Big mistake! Crunchy, tactile characters (and FMVs!!!), surprisingly fun combat, folk tales/hymns out the wazoo, mythos, Judero just plain has it all (except my completion of it). Jack King-Spooner one of the best doing it.
