How to feed your garden birds without spreading disease Summer feeding should be paused because this is a time when natural food sources such as caterpillars, bugs and flies, are much more abundant.

We have just updated our guidance on what and when to feed garden birds: Feed seasonally. Feed safely.

To reduce disease, we all need to make some urgent but simple changes to how we feed our garden birds.

Our new study, led by Sergi Herrando (EBCC chair, @ICOcells) published in Conservation Biology, shows that it is possible to create frequent and regular maps showing where farmland birds are disappearing across Europe by using the data from the Pan-European Common Bird Monitoring Scheme (PECBMS).

1/ The 2025 BBS Report is out now! It was a record year for volunteers taking part, with 2,800+ visiting 4,058 survey squares across the UK, Channel Islands & Isle of Man. A huge thank you to our volunteers!

Thanks Rob - I guess my point was that 'aerial' birds e.g. hirundines, swift, birds of prey, gulls, crows, doves etc are recorded separately in the BBS method - but are an important part of that local breeding bird community in a 1x1km square. Feels very odd to exclude them to me? 🐦

Fascinating🗒️@r-cooke.bsky.social & insights looking forwards - Methods say BBS "Counts were included from distance bands 1 to 3 (0–25 m, 25–100 m, >100 m); flyovers were excluded." But it would be a big mistake to exclude flying birds as an important part of the British avifauna. Is this a typo?

Genetic Diversity Impacts Climate‐Induced Species Range Shifts Genetic diversity may buffer species against climate-driven range contractions and facilitate expansions, but its role at a global scale remains unclear. Using 4673 range shift estimates for 1888 spe....

Does genetic diversity help species keep up with, or tolerate, climate change? 🌡️🌍

Our new BioShifts paper shows that high genetic diversity 🧬:
1) Reduces range contractions under fast warming
2) Accelerates range expansion under moderate warming

Another report, the same story – but louder.

We're way off track.

With just four years left until 2030, the UK’s Seventh National Report shows we’re failing 19 out of 23 nature targets.

It’s more proof that progress simply isn’t keeping pace with reality 👇
