Day 21 is Marilyn Dumont’s A Really Good Brown Girl. I first encountered her poetry when I did my Master’s degree at Carleton University in Ottawa back in 1994-95. Thanks to Dr. Brenda Carr for introducing me to the work of so many brilliant women poets that year!

Day 20 is Sylvia Plath’s Ariel. It’s a 1965 edition and cost 50p when it was first published by Faber. I mean, God—how do you explain what Sylvia Plath means to you as a woman poet? It’s a massive thing for me, and I’d need to share a pint with someone to tell you how much her work means to me.
Day 19 is Karen Solie’s latest collection, Wellwater. To be honest, I’m flummoxed that this stellar book of poetry wasn’t on the Griffin Poetry Prize list. Still shaking my head at its absence…
If you haven’t read it, just do it. Trust me on this one…
Sudbury folks—brilliant Newfoundland writer, Lisa Moore, is coming to town for Celebrate Women, a collaborative fundraiser put on by CFUW Sudbury, LEAF Sudbury, and the YWCA. Tickets are $20.

Day 18 is my friend Jane Burn’s beautiful book, The Apothecary of Flight. We met through a mutual friend—Pippa Little—and so I read with Pippa, Jane, and Joanne Clement when I visited Pippa in Newcastle, England about ten years ago. (How does that happen, with time rushing past like that?)
Day 17 is Maggie Nelson’s Bluets because it’s so fucking brilliant in so very many different ways.
Just the first few pages to encourage and seduce you to buy and read it.
Day 16 is my friend Tanis MacDonald’s Rue the Day. I’m biased. I’m a fan girl of her work and just love the quick turns of phrase, image, metaphor, line, and stanza. This is a lovely book from Turnstone Press in Winnipeg.
Tanis has a new book of poems coming out this fall called Tall, Grass, Girl.

Nothing kills my trust in an indie author faster than realizing the cover was AI-generated.
Last night an author was asked who illustrated it her cover.
She said, “Oh! It’s AI.”
"You're an author? Would I know anything you've written?"
"Have you heard of the book Eat Pray Love?"
"Oh wow. I have, actually!"
"Well, one of my books was printed in a typeface not totally dissimilar to the one in that."
"sex doesn't belong in YA books"
Listen, I learned more about birth control, menstruation, and how to get and give consent to different acts from Tamora Pierce books than I did from my school. There's a huge difference between smut and showing teens what healthy sexuality is.

Beautiful story of a man bonding with a robin.
The only brief reading I am doing at the Edmonton Poetry Festival this year is one piece from Riven (ECW Press 2020) at the Poetry and Stillness circle, as April 11th is the day I lost my partner Chris 16 years ago, thus, a quiet commemoration.

Day 10 is Carol Rose GoldenEagle’s collection, Hiraeth. We first met when I moderated a poetry panel at BookFest in Windsor in 2018.
Here are a few of my favourite poems. ✨❤️📚✍️
Cool! ✨🙏📚
So, @mcnallyrobinson.com in Winnipeg are one of my true ‘home bookstores’ and they now offer free shipping anywhere in Canada for orders of $50 and up. I just placed another order and thought I’d alert others they can do this. They’re great. I sign there with every book release.
Happy reading.
