Yeah Hugo didn't set out to write a book about social justice, that's for sure. He's racist himself in his portrayal of the Romani. Esmeralda does do some pretty bold things in the book, but in the end the book wasn't written to uplift her.

Oh yeah I hated that too. That was probably the thing that made me hate her the most. But she is a complicated character too.

As a former book Esmeralda hater please do remember she's a teenager who's living an unstable lifestyle, innocent and easily manipulated, shallow as teenagers can be but also full of kindness for strangers. Yes of course she's a damsel in distress. All the men in the book put her in distress.
