In reality, the greatest determinant in whether a driver will stop for a pedestrian is the design of the roadway itself. If you want drivers to chill out, you have to design streets that force them to chill out.
Clarifying the law and creating stiffer penalties isnāt a bad thing, though.

This bill would also change Ohio law to require drivers to āstop for pedestriansā within crosswalks, rather than āyield to pedestriansā
As one of the state reps put it: āIf a person's legally in a crosswalk, just chill out, drivers.ā
A road diet of S High St - where more than 70% of drivers exceed the speed limit - is one of the South Side Area Commissionās capital priorities. Last year 2 people walking were seriously injured while crossing S High. Now thereās been a fatal crash due to high speeds.

Yeah, itās not great if youāre just trying to get to the airport, but it exists.
Iād love something like AirConnect to return (with better hours, it couldnāt get you to early flights or home from later flights)ā¦but Iād much rather there be at least one line with frequent service south of Livingston
Columbus has a bus from the airport to downtown. But the trip takes an hour because it does more than just go to the airport.
(It looks like Indyās bus from the airport also takes an hour to get downtown)
The conditions on N. Wilson Road where a person was struck and killed late Monday night are about what you would expect - a nightmare for someone trying to get anywhere without a car.
Bus stop on S High St where a path has been cleared through a mound of snow
Mound of snow at a crosswalk at the intersection of S High St and Greenlawn Ave. A path where people have climbed over the snow bank to cross the street is visible. The snow bank is approximately 3 ft high.

Tackled a few more today
Bus stop on S High St in Columbus, OH. A path through a snow mound has been cleared between the sidewalk and the street.
Curb ramp at a signalized intersection on S High St in Columbus, OH. A path through a snow mound has been cleared between the sidewalk and the crosswalk.

Cleared a couple bus stops and curb ramps after work today. As I was heading in, someone else was starting to clear the next bus stop down

Yeah thatās the problem, if you want to turn left, itās a bad place to be, at least if there is other traffic on Lester Dr
Even when that is done, bikes merging across a lane that becomes a right turn lane is not really a maneuver most people would feel comfortable doing
The sharrow doesnāt make any sense either. Where is it directing bicyclists to go? Lester Dr dead ends at Broad, and the middle lane can also turn right.
The eventual plans, when Lester Dr is extended south, has a bike lane between the right turn lane and the middle lane (which would be thru only).
I was not prepared
I think they need the green arrow time in order to clear the traffic from the ramp.
From the article it sounds like they plan to make it a protected-only left, so left-turning traffic will have a red arrow during the trail crossing phase. If thatās the case that should eliminate the biggest issue.
An LPI canāt come before a green arrow phase, because a green arrow means vehicles can turn with no conflicts (including with peds). If the LPI was before the green arrow, the green arrow would come on while peds are still crossing. It would have to be a dedicated ped phase at that point.
The pedestrian signal heads are still covered on all corners. They were still installing the brick around the curb ramps when I went through there this morning.
I started the process of transferring my domains over from Squarespace (RIP Google Domains) to Cloudflare last night ⦠so naturally thereās a global Cloudflare outage today
PulsePoint shows there was a vehicle fire at Front & Whittier at 2:30
I know in the past the race director and his team have walked the course in the days following the race to clean up any trash, I wonder if they hadnāt done that yet
(I, for one, always leave my used energy gels in my empty cup at an aid station so theyāre easy to clean up)
Related: there is now an LPI at High St & 5th Ave for people crossing 5th (no LPI for people crossing High)
Do other cities/agencies install āsignal operation changedā signs when the only change is adding a leading pedestrian interval?
Columbus installs these signs on the mast arm/span wire when they add an LPI and it seems like a lot of labor for something that is otherwise just a small timing change
High Street in the Short North during an open streets event ("Hops on High") in May 2025. Vendors are set up in the street, with people walking in the street as well.
Can't go wrong checking out High St in the Short North, either. You just missed one of the Open Streets events this past weekend (these photos are from this spring). Streetscape was fully reconstructed 5-10 years ago.
East of downtown on Broad St, protected bike lanes recently went in. Nothing too crazy, but they are testing different types of vertical separation. There are also a pair of Zicla bus platforms. A future project will take this space and create a signature urban trail.

I'd also check out Gay Street. It's the classic example of urban infill in Columbus. Countless parking lots replaced with green space, townhomes, apartments. There's also an art piece, "Current," suspended above the Gay & High intersection.

Scioto Mile in downtown Columbus, with people walking, running, and biking on the Scioto Trail, and the LeVeque Tower in the background.
Columbus's trails are its strongest active transpo assets. Definitely check out the riverfront downtown (known as the Scioto Mile) -- it's truly a gem, with trails and lots of green space. Connects to the Olentangy trail. There's also an easy trail loop you can do (on the map).

Sunday schedule today too
Looking east on Whittier St towards the bridge over the railroad tracks. A 10ā wide shared use path has recently been paved with asphalt. The roadway has also been resurfaced. A 10ā wide shared use path has also been added to the bridge.
Looking west on Whittier St, away from the bridge over the railroad tracks. A 10ā wide shared use path has recently been paved with asphalt. The roadway has also been resurfaced. A temporary traffic signal remains in place.
Glad to see the new Whittier St shared use path (which carries the Scioto Trail over the railroad tracks between Scioto Audubon and Front St) has finally been paved!
I have lost count how many times Iāve seen westbound drivers run the red light only to have to back up the length of the bridge because there was oncoming traffic with a green
Itās being managed fine outside of working hours (as long as drivers donāt run the red light or move the barricades in Front St, which they do frequently). I know they have been pouring concrete on the bridge deck this week though so that may have caused additional delays during working hours
