How 2 fringe groups and a friendly judge helped pull off Sheriff Chad Bianco’s ballot seizure Emails obtained by CalMatters trace the development of a years-long case that ultimately led to the unprecedented seizure of 650,000 ballots.

Anat Rubin and I co-wrote a story for @calmatters.org about the people behind Sheriff Chad Bianco's "election investigation" -- sovereign citizens, Christian nationalists, and "constitutional sheriffs."

I grew up in Colorado with these beautiful columbines. Thanks. (I have them in my Montana yard.)

I don't know about you, but this doesn't fill me with confidence as the current federal administration attacks mail-in voting. Note the "US Postal Inspector POLICE Federal Agent" padded vest in the same style as ICE and Border Patrol vests. This is a screenshot from the USPIS website.

This is exactly right. It’s not a dilemma though. It’s a line in the sand that will at once once collapse what remains of the rule of law and regulatory infrastructure designed to protect the public.

U.S. Navy destroyer repeatedly warned an Iranian-flagged cargo ship to stop over a six-hour period on Sunday before firing on the ship's engine room, disabling the Iran-bound vessel to allow helicopter-borne Marines to board and seize it, U.S. Central Command said in a statement. When the crew of the Touska, the Iranian ship, ignored the American warnings, a destroyer fired its MK 45 gun into the cargo ship's engine room, Central Command said. On Sunday, Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit were conducting a search of the vessel, which is now in American custody.

One of the most blatant examples of sane-washing I've ever seen from the NYT.

This was an unarmed cargo vessel in international waters, crewed by noncombatants!

just write it terrible for five minutes and see where it goes. or write questions to yourself into the draft—“what the fuck goes here, i don’t know, but it’s something about blah blah this will sound smarter later” is acceptable rough draft material

The first time I engaged in civil disobedience and went to jail, circa 1969, was in an action to support UFW and the rights of farm workers to unionize.

No, but I'm pretty sure Zuck threw a swell bash for Emperor Augustus. Not only is the haircut inspirational, but he's said he liked Augustus' brutal approach to forcing change in everyone's interests.

Oh, I do understand; this is such a beautiful state. But the Montana Supreme Court is kind of a last bastion, even though Missoula and Helena do their best for myriad of rights and justice witnessing. I've been here 31 years and am planning my exit from the state. I'm queer, not trans.

I'm betting the right-wing gov and state legislature are going to try to find a way to convene a new state constitutional convention to get rid of all those pesky bits that give people serious rights that aren't in the US Constitution.

Remember when many folks kept telling us that Melania was a victim, and they were eager for the day when she dumped him? This feels the same to me.

Well, the state's mostly in the grip of the ruthless Right, but the Montana Supreme Court has done so well by us for so many years. This one's particularly fine.

Source, please? A reliable one? I loathe these people, but I also loathe photos circulated with claims that are not sourced.

Overcrowding, bad (no) medical care, not enough food, filth — these are average and expected in this country’s jails and prisons everywhere.
ICE detention conditions aren’t below the norm — that’s the norm. That’s what 2 million ppl and their families experience every day.

Rural places will get extra screwed by this. We already got screwed by the end of local cancellations (thanks anthrax scare). My local mail travels 3 hrs to a sorting center before getting postmarked and sent back. Sometimes it’s next day. Sometimes it’s a week later.

I loathe the guy. But source your accusation. Reliably, please. (And yes, I remember the Anita Hill travesty all too well.)

This story is horrific. Worth noting that Target is not the only retailer using AI for theft prevention. It’s an entire industry. And if you’re looking for alternatives that are safer to shop at in this regard, you’re very likely out of luck. Small, non-corporate businesses probably your best bet.
