Sacraments preparation should happen outside class - INTO An overwhelming majority of primary school teachers believe families or parishes should be responsible for preparing children for the sacraments of communion and confirmation.

Anna, primary teacher in West Cork with SENCO duties. Would really love to maximise the potential of AI to help with paperwork & planning. As you say, help 'make my life easier' to allow some brain space for actual teaching!!! #edchatie

What an uplifting way to end tonight's #edchatie and keep us going until mid-term 😜

The love of teaching, engaging with wonderful children and like-minded people both in school and during CPD. The sense of fulfilment from life-long learning. Knowing you are making a difference 🫢🏼 The rewarding messages that even the youngest pupils write in thank you cards πŸ₯° #edchatie

It's completely unsustainable. Even the surveys about teacher burnout are adding to the burnout!!! #edchatie

It's the constant requirement to be everything to everyone! The role of teacher has changed dramatically. Some of us seek out CPD in numerous areas during your own time and at your own expense to keep up🫠 More just paddle along frantically #edchatie

Reduction in the amount of points on the pay scale in line with public sector, clear career progression paths, opportunities for teacher mobility, all state-funded schools to be managed by the state! #edchatie

Yes, absolutely. I believe the lack of opportunity for teacher mobility affects this. #edchatie

Hi all πŸ‘‹πŸΌ
Anna Hurley, primary school teacher in West Cork. I've been teaching for 17 years and am an APII post-holder with SENCO as one of my main duties.
With regard to primary level, I believe the lack of diversity is a huge barrier. Almost 95% of schools are managed by religious bodies #edchatie

Yes, I know personal days aren't connected to CPD for PP. I meant that in primary, the EPV (Extra Personal Vacation) days, often referred to as course days, are only available to teachers who have completed the required amount of summer courses. These can begin on or after the 1st of July. #edchatie

1 year ago 1 0 0 0

As far as I know, the post-primary equivalent are personal days. Up to 5 days but no substitute cover provided. We complete 3 x 20hr minimum course to get up to 5 days. Dependent on BOM and some schools have restrictions around when they can be taken, etc. #edchatie

Absolutely...we can pick this up again elsewhere πŸ˜‰

1 year ago 1 0 0 0

I'm submitting a motion to INTO Congress again this year to ask that all Dept. approved CPD completed during the school year be counted towards EPV days. I believe such courses are chosen for genuine reasons. Summer courses tend to be chosen by many (not me obvs) solely for EPV days πŸ˜’ #edchatie

πŸ’― Look at all the professions that fund CPD for their employees. It was my local Credit Union that enabled me to pay for Hibernia all those years ago. I believe the fee has doubled since then 😬 #edchatie

1 year ago 2 0 0 0

It sure is. I began my M.Ed in 2020 and I'm still paying for it. Very grateful to Comhar Linn (INTO Credit Union) πŸ’Ά #edchatie

I make a point of keeping an updated Google doc tracking all of the CPD I do. I share it with my principal. I think it is important for CPD to be acknowledged and recognised in school. Even if it is as a result of me offering that information without being asked πŸ˜… #edchatie

Yes, absolutely 🎯 Aside from the obvious advantages personally and professionally, what incentive is there to spend such a huge amount of our own money and time completing further education at this level?

I'm lucky enough to live in the town where our local education centre is situated. If I'm not attending courses in person, I'm online! I completed/attended over 40 online during our first lockdown. It was fantastic to be able to access so much knowledge and upskill when it was needed most. #edchatie
