Most of my peers I served with cited similar things to me. Fear of poverty,need for healthcare, and a way to pay school, needing to formulate a plot. Sure, they wanted to be "worthy" of it. But if the military wasn't the only form of socialized medicine, society, and support they wouldnt have joined

Was there a degree of "honor" there? Yes, I wanted to serve my country and do my best.

I didnt believe that my service mandated me to be raped and harassed by my squadronmates. That pretty much kills the whole "patriot" in the mix.

My parents had 4 kids. 3/4 have served/ are serving in the military. (I was USAF)
In 2008, the one sibling that didn't join and went to college instead? Fucked. Royally. The Navy Sibling? Survived on their GI Bill and disability pay and kept their head above water. It was a simple lesson to learn.

Those were the 2 main issues for me in 2011 when graduating High School.
But I was raised in the military system. My Dad served 6 yrs with the Marines and 20 with the Army. The socialized medicine of the military was all I knew.
I fundamentally didnt understand how I was supposed to succeed w/o it

I would give up VA Healthcare benefits if it meant that every american had single payer healthcare. Because thats the end of the Military grift. No person should feel like they have to join the military in order to recieve basic healthcare.

Same goes for the GI Bill for universal education. 1 to 1
