In recent years, Seattle historic preservation groups have:
🪜 blocked removing ladders at Gasworks where 3 have died
🅿️ blocked housing to keep a historic parking garage in Pioneer Square
🏠 blocked housing in wealthy neighborhoods because of "historic" Craftsmans
🚙 tried to keep cars in Pike Place
These folks openly say they want to unwind the victories of the 20th century.
1,392 days to approve 91 units of housing in Seattle. This is just for the land use permit. Construction permit will take another ~300 days to approve. This was through “administrative” design review which is supposed to go faster. Took 6 correction cycles. We have to fix this stuff.
it’s an EXISTING BUILDING THAT ALREADY USED TO BE A WAREHOUSE STORE, i don’t even know why that needed environmental review at all. this is fucking bonkers
Heartbreaking: Extremely Wack Man Who Wants to Run for President But Will Lose Just made a Great Point
Women know that speaking out will get them some delightful combo of seeing their own career ended for being difficult to torrents of hate, harassment and threats.
And the harasser will do a Notes App apology, keep their head down for a year, and then be back
This reminds me of Cal Cunningham costing Dems a potential Senate seat in 2020. Can all the sex pests please stand up and gtfo before primary season ends?
What this country needs is a president who will destroy American institutions with American materials
Full statement from the IU here
The story of our age is billionaire narcissist men who are widely known to be frauds or creeps within their industries but are allowed to destroy the world in plain sight because American media & business view rich confidently-speaking white men through an infinitely-forgiving lens of merit.
What happens when you gut funding for the humanities? The available money and jobs go to what any given committee/funder/university thinks is “relevant” and you end up here.
"National Library Workers Day is a great time to remember that library workers consistently meet challenges and share joy in their communities - and that they deserve empathetic advocacy that includes actionable responses to their workplace concerns and expands stable employment opportunities with equitable compensation.” KAETRENA DAVIS KENDRICK
Happy National Library Workers Day!

Once again, the national average pay for adjunct professors with PhDs is a flat fee of $3900 per course.
I didn’t know that about Larry Andrew/Omar, but it makes sense! Thousands of people in West Baltimore lost their homes for the highway, because they were condemned and/or because the neighbors’ were and families chose not to stick around to see how things would shake out. (Badly. Surprise!)
Thank you!!
After my dad’s health forced him to retire, I spent a decade organizing his research and uncollected writing, finishing after he died in 2018. Now @tomsugrue.bsky.social has edited this volume of it (and written a great intro) for @uchicagopress.bsky.social.

ROAD TO NOWHERE: HOW A HIGHWAY MAP WRECKED BALTIMORE is out now! It’s about how powerful “just” a map can be, and about all the things highways take from us…even when they never get built. bookshop.org/p/books/road...
Nothing stops displacement and gentrification like using zoning to preserve single family homes that sell to wealthier and wealthier buyers, doubling in value every 5 years.
Seattle defined: A city council hearing about adding housing density. A Gen Xer (against) in a KEXP hat screaming about Orcas.
I don’t know what saving either the profession or the discipline means, if it doesn’t involve preserving pathways to full careers.
If the institutions best placed to do so, however troubled, are not willing to make that commitment, then it is delusional to think those less well placed will step up.
Would be great if Manfred instituted this rule in MLB: only dogs can be bat boys.
one of the great journalistic photographs of US history
There is no non-disgraceful reason on God’s green earth for this to have taken ten (10!) years.
It’s actually not okay to pay someone with a PhD $2500 to teach a college course
