Yeah, it's really interesting. I just read this book like 2 weeks ago, and I love the idea that the mage isn't necessarily in control, and that they are just a tool that "the magic" works through.

I don't even like playing City builder / sims of any kind, but as a game developer who is a bad game designer, they are so tempting. No level design, no enemy AI design. Just really complicated systems and UI. I can do systems and UI

Happy to hear it. Be proud you got something out there. It's a far bigger accomplishment than people give credit for.
I think I've just realized I'm more of an "educator/general problem solver" than an actual "Game Developer/Designer" Ultimately I enjoy what I do with GM and try not to pressure myself into thinking "I must do something with all of this time I've invested into the engine."
I'm happy helping others.

That's awesome, but I think I can answer that question.
Adding variety of combat an encounter types with mostly melee enemies is really difficult. Projectiles give you so many options for creating different scenarios and gives you lots of potential tools for players to solve those challenges.
