“Renewables and its associated technologies are now commonly perceived as an energy security tool, no longer only a way to combat pollution and climate change, but a geopolitical asset supported by pragmatism rather than idealism..."

As electricity demand surges, ensuring adequate resources is getting more attention. Our latest paper quantifies the important role of shared reserves in China’s evolving power grid for enhancing reliability and cost savings (~$250 Bil in Capex and 5-8% in OpEx/yr). Read more below
Sharing our paper on CMM emissions:
– Emission factors (EF) are closely associated with locations and gaseous levels of coal mines in China, but not with their depth
– Production shift from the Southwest to the North and Northwest has tampered the growth of CMM: 2023 estimate ~20.0 Tg (+/-17%)
Our latest analysis shows 1) cutting the last 10-20% of CO2 emissions in China's #power system is highly cost-effective: less than 1% increase in system costs, dwarfed by substantial #climate and #health benefits; 2) such reduction requires almost a tripling of #China's transmission network by 2050
In 2024, #China added 373 GW of renewables including 278 GW of solar and 80 GW of wind power. Renewables now contribute to 35% of its electricity generation. Moreover, the incremental renewable generation met ~ 86% of the demand growth! The #CleanEnergyTransition is irreversible!

More EV chargers in workplace parking lots would be another way to attract people back to office!
California’s new building codes will require #EV chargers in most new overnight parking spots starting in 2026, going a big way toward solving the only actual problem with EVs.

Our recent paper @Nature Communication shows:
1 a large (660 Mtons of CO2e) potential @ an avg cost of -$6.40/tCO2e in China in 2030
2 methane emissions in China could be reduced by 37% by 2035, compared to that in 2020
3 support is needed to cut remaining emissions

As the cost of battery storage continues to drop and wholesale electricity market expands in China, the case for solar and storage is even better today than we wrote the story earlier in 204. @berkeleylabemp.bsky.social @berkeleylab.bsky.social
