Good team, bad losses Photo by Mjmalone54. The Pirates lost three games last week. One of those losses was bad, while the other two were among the worst defeats I can remember. On Saturday, the Pirates raced out to an early 4-0 lead behind Paul Skenes, who had settled into the rocking chair after a wild 2nd inning. An extended rain delay knocked Skenes out of the game and the Pirates off theirs; the Rays scored 5 runs in the 5th inning to take a 5-4 lead, which the Bucs eventually tied to force extra innings.

Last week, the Bucs suffered two of the worst losses I could remember. But that doesn't change the fact that this is shaping up to be a pretty good Pirates team — something that those losses prove in their own, weird way.

Thursday’s loss to the Nationals was worse but I didn’t think they’d get that close so quickly

There are going to be games that suck to lose because you can’t get the big hit (Tuesday) and games that suck to lose because of a mistake in a big spot (Sunday) but this was a game they lost because of multiple huge mistakes. Undoubtedly the worst loss of the year

Awesome to see them battle back but man, the Pirates would be cruising to an easy win if they just played some smarter baseball

As I wrote earlier this month, fans shouldn't be surprised if Griffin struggles at the plate to start his big-league career. His performance on Tuesday night was an encouraging step buccoball.wordpress.com/2026/04/03/k...

This weekend, I finally had the chance to sit down and write about the amazing April 3 home opener, which was the kind of game I had been dreaming about for years buccoball.wordpress.com/2026/04/13/a...

Afternoons I have dreamed of Photo by Joshua Peacock. I had only been to one home opener during my first thirty years as a Pirate fan, and that game was going to be a tough one to top. In 2023, after several modest moves to improve the roster (signing Carlos Santana counted as a major addition at that stage of the rebuild) — and, most importantly, the return of Andrew McCutchen — my uncle decided to snag tickets for the home opener as an early wedding present for me.

I was fortunate enough to attend this year's home opener. The atmosphere in PNC Park that afternoon was something I had been waiting for for a long, long time.

Konnor Griffin put pen to paper yesterday on a 9-year contract that will keep him in black-and-gold for a long time. I wrote about his newly-signed contract and what fans can expect from this precocious young talent buccoball.wordpress.com/2026/04/03/k...

The Pirates are off to a hot start in part because Oneil Cruz is off to a hot start. If the Bucs are going to make the playoffs this year, they'll need their talented and sometimes frustrating centerfielder to be a part of it buccoball.wordpress.com/2026/04/02/t...

Konnor Griffin has arrived, and he’s here to stay Even before the big news was announced on Thursday morning, anticipation for the home opener in Pittsburgh was at a level I hadn't seen in a long time. There was already a crackle of excitement in the air this spring, thanks to a busier-than-normal winter in which the Pirates made substantial (for them, at least) investments into the lineup to supplement a strong starting rotation.

A year ago, Konnor Griffin was making his debut in the minor leagues. Today, the 19-year-old is making his MLB debut in Pittsburgh. I wrote about Griffin's rapid rise, what fans should expect, and his rumored nine-year contract.

The Pirates still need Oneil Cruz Sorry, I could only find a minor-league photo that wasn't copyrighted. Photo by Minda Haas Kuhlmann. The Pirates have assembled one of the best rotations in baseball, featuring arms that were all drafted and developed by the organization. The team supplemented this promising staff with the most active offseason I can remember, and those acquisitions — with one notable exception — are off to a hot start.

Oneil Cruz is a frustrating player, but it's hard to see the Bucs being a good team in 2026 without him.

Game 1: Pirates 7 Mets 11 Well, that was fun for about ten minutes. Oneil Cruz opened the game with a bloop single into center, which Brandon Lowe followed with an impossibly high fly ball that somehow carried over into the short right-field porch for a 2-run homer. The optimism from a winter of activity had spilled over into the first half-inning of the regular season, and all of Pittsburgh rejoiced as the Pirates provided Paul Skenes some early runs support thanks to a player acquired in the offseason.

The Pirates played a rough game on Thursday, but remember — it was one game.

Never mind, they also showed an As-Astros game that night. Guess I assumed it was only one due to Thursday night football
