We began to slowly rebuild our home.
No windows, so we use nylon. No door, so we use a sheet. If the water ran out, we need a cart to go and get it. We try to survive, but it's been 15 months of living like this, it's made us abnormal people. Will I live to see this end? 11/11

Back home, I found it half destroyed, with damaged streets and 80% infrastructure gone. No electricity, no internet, no water, no even running water, no windows, no doors. Life looked like shades of grey. Destruction is everywhere, but we try to rebuild 10/11

Every day the basics of life decreased, food ran out, diapers got expensive, and baby milk was scarce. When would this war end? Then came the leaflets to evacuate Rafah to Khan Yunis after the military operation. That was the shock 9/11

We held on to the hope that it would end. For six months, I counted every second. When could we return? When would it end? Each day was worse. Is it possible to live after seeing so much death? My wife bore all the burdens: children, laundry, food, water 8/11

One day, I feared my son would die from the cold. I took my family to relatives. We lived in an old warehouse-like house, no windows, 68 of us in 100 meters. It was like a nightmare. We were crowded everywhere, without internet or electricity 7/11

In Rafah, there were huge crowds, everyone bumping into each other. It's so difficult to cram a million and a half people into a city lacking the basics. We stayed in a tent in December, shivering with cold. I couldn't even speak or feel my hands 6/11

It was so painful to leave our home and life, carrying just a bag, unsure of returning, or even staying alive. We left just like other people. I tried to delay, but had to leave. Life became like a firestorm. Shelling and missiles were everywhere until we decided to leave 5/11

Our house was made of zinc, and I feared for our safety the first days of the war. We slept at my parents'. We tried to remain optimistic, that the war would end. But month after month, things got harder. We got leaflets to evacuate south towards Rafah 4/11

The war began and everything became random, no one understood anything. The most important thing became protecting my family. My wife was still recovering from childbirth, my second child was on the way, and my son was so young, we didn't know the conditions we'd be facing 3/11

I'm so happy that I'm still alive after 466 days of war. Honestly, I've seen all forms of death, grief, hunger, oppression, and pain during those days. From the start, I felt the end would be difficult and I'd lose many, but I didn't expect we'd reach this stage 2/11

Last night, I spoke with Hassan al-Akhras, a father and volunteer leading the 'Child's Smile' project in #Gaza. His words pierce the heart like a blade. Here’s what he shared with me 1/11
