Two young hands holding the hands of an older person

Two young hands holding the hands of an older person

Geriatric medicine is:
- Refusal of easy solutions and predefined algorithms,
- To look at the entire puzzle, not at one single piece of it,
- Giving back to who gave us,
- My hope when I will be old.

Let’s talk about death? I am all for cafe culture and, with my addiction to caffeine, I have been a frequent visitor to Rosarios to put the world to right over a cup of black Italian coffee. There are many things to talk about in conversation with friends and family, but the end of your life isn't usually one of them! That's when I heard about the Death Cafe - an idea born in Switzerland but quickly spreading to London and around the world. We are not talking about a counselling session but a group get-together for the purpose of talking about the subject over food and drink.

Couldn’t agree more - it’s now a routine part of my outpatient assessment as well as inpatient. Patients understand it’s an evolving document and their wishes can change. We do it together and put it on Somerset’s fab electronic TEP there and then. Much relief.

I think I got a bit fierce about the so called ‘frailty index’ as created in various poor iterations for use in cardiovascular trials. Not the FI as a geriatrician knows it.. I didn’t say fraud but others have 😬

The level of #Frailty in #Cardiovascular trial participants isn’t always assessed w due care, so applicability to a wider popn isn’t as straightforward as some triallists would claim academic.oup.com/ageing/article… - editorial to accompany great study by Bousetta et al @emmavardy2.bsky.social

I should have expected it, but it still shocks me how little news orgs care about the fact that corruption has destroyed nearly all consumer/labor/environmental/public safety protection and corporate oversight during Trump's second term

media ownership supports this outcome

The sad thing isn’t really the difference in perceived and real loneliness - it’s that so many people are actually lonely

1. Placing these two graphs side by side shows why we have a prisons crisis. They can also be seen as a kind of Authoritarianism Index, showing the trend in state attitudes.
On the left is the Crime Survey for England and Wales.
On the right is the UK prison population.

Good question. I’d base this on family/carer report. If they feel dementia drugs aren’t giving a meaningful improvement, best stop. They can worsen incontinence agitation unsteadiness. Agree re domino ad but this was average result. Some wd be better on Rx, others no difference. Is that sensible?
