@whitequark don't forget the distinction between Windows PowerShell (the version that is preinstalled) and PowerShell (the modern but not backwards compatible version, but you have to explicitly install it)

@glyph I'm a gen AI hater, but reluctantly having to engage and participate in the current ecosystem, including supporting it at work. I'm pretty much the target audience for this, happy to give it an advance pair of eyes, or just read it when you publish.

@glyph Because photovoltaics on the roof would be extra expense and more to break for not much benefit. You really can't charge that fast with photovoltaics that fit on a roof, it would top you off a little bit but you'd still need to plug in to charge unless you were driving only very […]

@dalias OK, yeah, I guess I have seen a few like that, but it doesn't seem like it's been a significant trend. Kind of annoying, I agree.

@dalias Not sure I'm familiar with the effect you're referring to (I mean, I know what a vignette filter is, just haven't seen the trend of applying it to screenshots), do you have a link to such a post?

@jmac but a large part of the appeal of nerd dice is having all of the platonic solids

@larsmb As far as what advantage people see:

* I've seen people who were not programmers be able to create applications in a far shorter time than it would take to work with a programmer, give them their vision for the application, iterate, etc. Are these apps maintainable, or free of security […]

@larsmb I don't have any papers or discourse that serious, but just some observations.

First, I think your question presupposes that people are aware of its ethical shortcomings.

A lot of people just see it as a cool new tech and don't question it. I think there are a lot of people, even […]

@whitequark I feel like the rise of LLMs is mostly just an acceleration of the trend that already existed.

There's long been the tension within FLOSS software, between the fact that you're making technology more accessible, and you're helping out greedy capitalists who just want to squeeze […]

@futurebird @thejessiekirk That was quite a race! Wow, that last mile was intense.

@mogul Alright, that's it. I'm changing my default search to DuckDuckGo. I've been reluctantly staying with Google because Google still mostly provides better results, but if they're going to start editing titles, that's just too much. Let's see if this sticks, but I've switched my browser default.

@VoiceofDuum Yep, you can see the harmonica and sax doubling on the riff at https://youtu.be/BsrqKE1iqqo?t=126 in the video. I guess that's what I interpreted as "brassy" in my memory.

Such a great riff!

OK! I hummed it to my partner and they got it... It was the sax riff from Low Rider.

What's that song that goes "duh duh duh duh duh DUH... duh duh duh duh duh" that I have stuck in my head?

@xgranade Are you asking literally? I'm going to give an explanation, but sorry if this was just rhetorical and you're not actually looking for an explanation.

Valuation just means the expected value that the company will produce over all time, based on what the most recent round of investors […]

Screenshot of comment on StackOverflow. The timestamp for it simply reads "over a year ago", while if you hover over it you see the exact date was in 2009.

Wow, StackOverflow. Are you trying to stay relevant by collapsing all timestamps on conversations to "over a year ago"?

There's a big difference in relevance, in the tech world, between "2 years ago" and "17 years ago", collapsing everything down to "over a year ago" is pretty useless.

@matt Yeah. And in modern LLMs, particularly those with heavy RLHF (reinforcement learning with human feedback), the kinds of people who are prone to be affected by this, are the kind that vote the responses that trigger this higher, leading to a positive feedback loop promoting this exact kind […]

The perfect genre of YouTube video.

* Thumbnail is just a frame from the video, no faces with stupid expression or bold clickbait text
* Title describes exactly what is in the video
* Cute animal doing cute animal stuff

@kevinbowen @hachyderm @hachyinfra Oh, hey, I recognize that issue! Yeah, same here.

I'm guessing that one of the proxies has some bad nginx settings, but I'm not on the Hachyderm infra team.

@glyph I follow a couple of folks on there, but yeah, been considering blocking it, the spam is getting real bad and I'm not sure if there are any mods paying attention.

Food and Climate Change: Healthy diets for a healthier planet | United Nations What we eat, and how that food is produced, affects our health but also the environment. Food needs to be grown and processed, transported, distributed, prepared, consumed, and sometimes disposed of. Each of these steps creates greenhouse gases that trap the sun’s heat and contribute to climate change. About a third of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions is linked to food.

@jamesmunns.com Not to mention that beef has a much higher GHG cost than pork: www.un.org/en/climatechange/science...

So yeah, replacing the beef patty with an impossible burger while leaving a bit of bacon on for flavor is quite efficient on a carbon basis.

@matt @glyph Working fine for me other than any recommendations. Search and subscriptions still work fine. It's really nice, honestly; there's nothing trying to influence what you watch next, it's up to you to just search for things or dig around in channels that you're subscribed to.

2 months ago 0 0 0 0

@glyph It's kind of refreshing, actually. Instead of getting a whole bunch of videos recommended, I can just go look through my subscriptions and find what I want to watch.

I like this new YouTube experience that you've imposed on everyone by your choice of videos to watch!

2 months ago 0 0 1 0

@glyph Eh, YouTube is breaking for me right now too. I think they might just be having some kind of partial outage. Home page gives me no videos, but I can go directly to channels via my subscriptions and watch videos just fine.

@myrrlyn.net I'm wondering if:

* The voice chat mode in the app has some extra prompting to keep answers short
* The user has some hidden setting (a memory or user prompt or whatever, not sure what the options in the ChatGPT app are but I know there are ways to give it extra context) that is […]
