Etymology of the day: ‘book’ comes from an ancient root shared by ‘beech’, a wood that people used for engraving inscriptions. ‘Paper’ comes from ‘papyrus’, and ‘volume’ is from the Latin for a ‘roll’ of parchment.

I told my agent I wasn’t in my book at all.
Years later, I realized I was wrong. No matter how ‘fictional’ a story is, the writer is always there. Before I Go to Sleep wasn’t about me… but looking back, I see I was on every page—grappling with identity, ambition, and the fear of losing myself.
