what if one stopped taking the view that there is any single "The Authentic People" in the US, a concept which is in itself rooted in volkishness and fascism. what if instead we took the position that any attempt to determine "authenticity" is some fascist bullshit and everyone deserves care.

It is genuinely incredible to me how much evidence there is to support investing in the public good and how much animus there is to do this simple, effective thing.

Nature: Winter is a time of slowing down, resting, conserving energy and recovering for the year ahead

Capitalism: NOW IS THE TIME TO SELL SELL SELL, EXTENDED OPENING HOURS, CHECK OUT OUR SALES, BUY EVERYTHING WE SAY YOU NEED FOR AN ELABORATE LABOUR-INTENSIVE FESTIVAL, WORK YOURSELF TO THE BONE

Yep. I was in a wedding in the mid '70s in which I wore a pinafore and sunbonnet. Long after I outgrew the dress, I kept that sunbonnet and eventually passed it down to my stuffed animal.

I just want to say wrt the Twitter location discussion that Bluesky also has an increasing amount of non-US accounts pretending to be Americans in the replies to big political threads.

At least I definitely notice the ones with Russian memes in username/pfp/etc and I'm sure there's tons I miss.

Describe a topic, idea, or concept that you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time.
Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?

"I'm AuDHD. What doesn't? LOL", only make it ~600 words and sound like a coherent grownup wrote it.

I: need to write my college essay

I: instead am busily falling down a paludarium rabbithole while also bingewatching fancy baking and cookie decorating

In "things I really liked in fifth grade that turned out to be awful", TIL that Wiggington, the guy behind the Foxfire project, SA'd his students.

(The other thing: Laura Ingalls Wilder's libertarian daydream/self-reinvention of rugged individualism, which I wanted to live in that year.)

Busily procrastinating about an appllication essay (see last post) and raising a couple batches of kittens (3 kittens; 2 adopted and mostly grown, then 1 emergency rescue) distracting me from having my youngest in residential college starting this term. How's by you?

somebody on here suggested awhile back that a pretty compelling 2028 Democrat campaign promise would be "on day one I will deploy a WPA-scale army of forensic accountants across every square inch of the federal government" and I think about that every day

I repeat: the CEO of Roblox, a service where a little less than half of the users are under the age of 13, thinks his service would make a great dating site.

I didn’t know until now that in the original Rosie the Riveter painting, she is crushing a copy of Mein Kampf under her foot. Happy feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, remembering all the women who crush the serpents of Satan under their heel.

AAP will continue to publish its own vaccine recommendations after CDC advisers sow distrust The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices plans to form a work group to review child and adolescent immunization schedules, which AAP experts say create a false narrative they are flawed.

🧪This needs to happen. The current ACIP panel cannot be trusted & any guidance from them is no longer credible. The American Academy of Pediatrics will still be recommending vaccines as done previously.
