Wer die Steer nicht zahlte, wurde zur Zwangsarbeit auf den Plantagen verptlichtet. Die bevolkerung leistete von Beginn an Widerstand gegen die Kolonialmacht; mit der symbolischen Zerstörung einer Baumwollplantage begann 1905 der Maji-Maji-Krieg, der bis 1907 dauerte. Songea Lwafu Mbano war einer der Anführer im Wider-standskampf. Er wurde von deutschen Truppen am 27. Februar 1906 zusammen mit 66 Kämpfern der Ngoni testgenommen, erhängt und enthauptet. Seine Nachfah- ren suchen bis heute nach seinem Schädel, der mit vielen weiteren Gebeinen nach Deutschland in anthropologische Sammlungen gebracht wurde. Am Ort der Hinrichtungen in Tansanias Süden steht heute das Maji-Maji-Memorial Museum. Die Fotografie von Songea Lwafu Mbano entstand 1906 in einem kolonialen Kontext. Als einzige überlieferte Aufnahme von ihm entwickelte das Bild ein Eigenleben und findet sich heute in Tansania in Schul-büchern und Museen. The colonial administration imposed numerous restrictions on hunting and forest use, along with a capitation tax. Those who failed to pay the tax were forced to work on plantations. The local population resisted colonial rule from the start. The Maji-Maji War erupted in 1905 with the symbolic destruction of a cotton plantation and lasted untll 1907. Songea Lwafu Mbano was one of the leaders of the resis-tance. On 27 February 1906, he and 66 Ngoni warriors were arrested, hanged, and beheaded. His descendants are still searching for his skull, which, along with many other remains, was sent to anthropological collections in Germany…“

Sie erhob sich gegen Entrechtung, Zwangsarbeit und Plantagenwirtschaft, aber auch gegen Jagd- und Waldnutzungsverbote. Mit der Einführung der deutschen Forstverwaltung wurden von 1893 an zahireiche Waldverordnungen erlassen, die den Zugang der ansässigen afrikanischen Bevölkerung massiv einschränkten. The AFRICAN VIOLET, known in German as the Usambaraveilchen, was named for its place of origin: the Usambara Mountains in northeastern Tanzania. Like many plants and animals, it was increasingly imported to Germany during the colonial period. The German Empire began acquiring colonies in Africa in 1884/85, including present-day Tanzania, making the land part of the so-called protectorate of German East Africa. From the start, local populations resisted colonial rule. They protested against disenfranchisement, forced labour, and the plantation economy, as well as bans on hunting and forest use. When the German forest administration took hold around 1893, Numerouo regulations severely restricted indigenous Africans' access to the forests. Resistance peaked in 1905 with the outbreak of the Maji-Maji War.“
