turns out it left a stale "cdrom" apt list for the removed USB and if _any_ sources.list.d fails the GUI updater just says it can't do anything (unlike terminal)

I do not pity a normal person having to fix this kind of shit

ubuntu installer hangs indefinitely with a python error at the last step

restart / shutdown don't work, they just go back to the ubuntu login screen. have to fully power cycle

comes up "installed", but did it actually finish? check for software updates - have internet, but index doesn't work

at this point I'm up to having involved 3 different working computers to help set up this new computer
