We just use the word differently. Housing should be for people to live in, not traded like silver futures. The financialization of everything hasn’t improved the standard of living for most of us, just a select few.

You can sell it just fine. Just not make an enormous profit from it. That’s how it works in countries that build enough housing. You cannot simultaneously have affordable housing and housing that is a great investment.

Unfortunately America prioritizes the latter.

The Berkeley Student Housing Cooperative provides housing without a profit motive. It’s possible to decommodify housing. You just don’t like how it’s done.

It’s possible in some future world where the Democrats take power and the US government tries to influence Isreal policy in a more humane way that you might be able to argue that it accomplished something.

1) The people in Gaza are suffering under a brutal genocidal occupation.
2) Tilting at windmills is stupid.
3) The Gaza student protest movement accomplished nothing except to spread ill will amongst the left.

All these things can be true at the same time.

One of my pastels from nearly 30 years ago showing a path across Jesus Green in Cambridge. I think this was late in the year with a few leaves hanging on to the trees with some autumn colour remaining. It was bought by a late friend and is now with his family.
