As if to highlight the point from my rant
Their ideology is not compatible with democracy. With human dignity. With empowering those who've been disenfranchised. It's just a naked, disgusting path to inhumane policies. Championed by people who, as soon as you point this out, piss their collective pants about you being mean to them.
I see this so much in what modern conservative ideologues believe and talk about. Their lack of care that Trump is likely a child rapist. Their fanaticism when it comes to ICE killing people. Their eagerness in silencing whatever media criticizes their politics or the administration.
They only believe in injustice. In cruelty. In hierarchy that places white, Protestant, cishet men in a protected in-group and everyone else in an outgroup. An outgroup who have no rights. An outgroup who must be destroyed.
I bring all of this up because the video, especially the parts I shared, I feel are a glimpse into what the Republican Party and hard-line conservatives.
They don't believe a word they say when they talk about rights or free speech or small government.
Fitzhugh declared the idea of everyone being created equal an "infidel doctrine" and that the oligarch rebellion was a "solemn protest against the doctrines of natural liberty, human equality" and other ideas that promoted liberty and equality.
They agreed with ideas promoted by ideologues like George Fitzhugh who had long maintained that "it would have been well for us" if documents espousing individual rights like the Virginia Bill of Rights and the Act of Religious Toleration "had remained dead letters."
They only cared about achieving their desires of expanding slavery and their wealth at whatever the cost, including (and especially) lives.
Some spoke of laying the "venerable doctrine" of state's rights "on the shelf." Many warmed up to the authoritarianism inevitable in slave systems.
Pro-slavery politicians and ideologues screamed about the Constitution, their rights to "property" (meaning human people), and about the threat of an overbearing state.
They dropped ALL pretense once the slave-holding elite rebelled in 1861.
They didn't give a damn about these rights.

What opened my eyes was actually near the end of the video where he reviews Confederates' plans for their state.

I'll miss the sensible looking districts, but I love democracy more than I like neat maps. If Republicans are going to engage in mid-decade political gerrymandering, the average American gains nothing by just letting them do this unincumbered. Brownie points are useless if I'm losing my rights.
