The need for storytelling and the relational in an age of isolating and overwhelming dystopian information โ€” Dimensions Variable Information wonโ€™t tell us who we are, or who we are with

"Stories are an antidote to severance"

I've been sharing a bunch of excerpts from my essay series, Beyond the Altar, over on IG, and itโ€™s time for me to get more comfortable sharing it here. this essay is where my head is still, even 1 1/2 years later.

The union representing thousands of Harvard graduate students just went on strike - The Boston Globe The university and its graduate student union are at odds over pay and protections for noncitizen students.

Faculty, your job is to be annoyed at the administration and back the students 100%!

From L.A.'s Eastside to "The Edge of Space-Time" In her new book, Chanda Prescod-Weinstein explores the cosmos, climate change and who gets to go to the moon โ€” with doses of โ€œAlice in Wonderlandโ€ and Dodgers baseball, too.

Thanks to @nadrakn.bsky.social for this piece about my relationship to California & how it shapes my space-time:

โ€œYou need to know that your relationship to the universe is more important than your relationship to Donald Trump โ€ฆ you choose how you will relate with the rest of the cosmos, not him.โ€œ

I have been feeling very nostalgic for an unwalled discursive space like blog circles with comment sections, eg blogspot and wordpress writers who were networked up through RSS but I donโ€™t know if itโ€™s possible to return to that bsky.app/profile/wend...

I really miss the age of salon-like digital spaces where you could exercise your intellect & throw things against the proverbial wall. I grew & learned from reading exchanges on Twitter - especially around cultures outside my own and academic disciplines outside of my expertise.

I miss the days of blog discussions, cross-converations across blogs, rss feeds, and just the overall flourishing of ideas and exchange of those times. I haven't been my fullest self on social media, esp Bsky, in some time, but I want to be. I love it when connection and community are made, so much!

Ossoff: "How does American politics really work? It's coin operated. Money goes in, favors come out. It's been running on secret money, corporate money, billionaire money ... all of this gave rise to a depraved president who exploits this rot to empower and enrich himself"

The Old Iron Dream an article inspired by the need for a no-bullshit, critical look at the history of science fictionโ€™s far-right and its long-lasting influence. The Old Iron Dream is a non-fiction book by David Forbes...

Once upon a time, I wrote a short book about the insidious influence of the sci-fi far-right and how it remained an underrated threat.

Anyway, turned out to be prescient if you want to know a bit more about how we got here:

Joan Semmel Is Doing Her Best Work at 93 โ€œYou say, โ€˜Fuck you. I'm good and you're wrong,โ€™โ€ she told Hyperallergic. โ€œThis is who I am, this is what I do, and this is what I care about.โ€

I took the photos for this story by Aaron Short: โ€œA lot of pornography dealt with power rather than erotic stimulation, and that power is what was interesting about pornography for men,โ€ she said. โ€œI wanted to make sexuality an empowerment for women rather than a disempowerment.โ€

The Democrats sense that they're gonna cruise to midterm victory by doing nothing and offering nothing and are using it as a freebie to punch left to make sure the voters don't get any ideas.

I really wish more people had paid attention when several observers tried to warn about the technofascist and eugenicist tendencies of thiel and karp and that group, for rolling up on two decades, now.

And i *Really* wish the media & political actors would take the threat of them seriously, today ๐Ÿ˜•

You absolutely SHOULD NOT go around telling people that data centers are full of gold, silver, palladium, copper, and that the data centers are almost entirely unstaffed.

One of the big conservative grievances against Biden was that his administration jawboned Facebook and others into removing COVID-skeptical and election misinfo content, but SCOTUS tossed that case because there was no proof the admin caused censorship.

Here, Bondi and Noem gleefully admitted it.

Authoritarians should not be able to get an app censored from hundreds of millions of people's phones by sending an email to two companies.

There is no universe where that will ever be a tenable situation for free expression.

You should have the right to install software on devices you own
