I revisit Marx's critique of the relationship between labour, technology and the surplus population and situate it within the context of capitalism's directionality

Average Tory leadership hopeful: we should re-establish the Raj. Let's have a fifth Anglo-Asante war. I do not think that Romanians count as people on a legal or metaphysical level.

Labour response: after 14 years of Tory mismanagement only Labour can be trusted to strip Romanians of their souls.

We're not fighting to defend human rights, they've never been anything more than a PR exercise for Western imperialism.
You can't defend something that doesn't yet exist.
We're fighting for them to be created and universally applied for the first time.
Only then will they really be 'rights'.

Some of the Palestinian bodies being released by Israel "show signs of torture, execution" according to AJ.
Meanwhile Hamas says its can't release the bodies of dead Israelis (because Israel dropped buildings on them).
The media focus for stories from these facts?

Writing isn’t just about what you say, it’s about what you refuse to lose in the process.

Read my conversation with Cas Mudde on writing, voice, and resisting conformity in academia, in the media, and on the page.

Who on 'the left' could have predicted the catastrophe that is Starmer's Labour Party and the rise of the far right? Almost anyone outside the cult of centrism.

One path to a successful career as a columnist is to be repeatedly wrong. Not to have unique takes on matters of opinion, but confident declarations proven wrong by events. If you can condescend to people proven right no matter how often you are wrong, the most prominent media would like to pay you.

In a world riven by inequality and devastated by climate + ecological crisis, what would it take for "green industrial policy" to empower the working class in Global North + South, and be truly green?

New @cplusc.bsky.social report by me and Isabel Estevez (1/3) t.co/78sQQe4d1g

This government could have taken on the super-rich to tackle inequality.

They chose to fan the flames of racism and embolden the far-right instead.

Our country needs a change in direction, now.

It’s time for a real alternative that redistributes wealth, ownership and power.

I really enjoyed this conversation on INDIGNITY with David for @ppfideas.bsky.social - it is even better if you listen to the whole series (previous two episodes were on philosophical and then legal/political interpretations of dignity)!

It's remarkable how ~2017-2019 was an all-hands existential struggle to eradicate the unacceptable scourge of bigotry and racism from British politics forever, and now it's this, all day, every day, and not a single one of our commentariat has noticed nor has anything to say about it.

Instead of criminalising peaceful demonstrators, the Government should be focusing on taking immediate and unequivocal action to put a stop to Israel’s genocide and ending any risk of UK complicity in it.

Also, no one starts off knowing how to draw well.
YOU HAVE TO DRAW BADLY FIRST TO GET BETTER.
You have to draw daily, badly, before you ever get better.
And its fun, sometimes, and painful, sometimes.
Why are we teaching our students that none of this matters because "the machine will do it"
