“I’m glad the court rejected Florida’s attempt to put industry over our treasured wildlife and wild places,” said Jason Totoiu, senior attorney.
“Florida’s wetlands and wildlife deserve all the protection they can get."

A court just ruled that permits to build in #Florida wetlands should stay in the hands of federal regulators, not the state 🎉🐊🐢
The ruling upholds a 2020 decision that the EPA and Fish and Wildlife violated the #ESA when they approved Florida’s wetlands permitting program in 2020.

“We’ve got record low water storage basin-wide, an unprecedented heat wave decimating a record low snowpack, and decades of flow declines attributable in part to human-caused #ClimateChange,” McKinnon told Truthout.
Projections show that critical lakes and reservoirs in the Colorado River Basin could reach catastrophically low levels by mid-2027, according to Taylor McKinnon, our the #southwest director at the Center for Biological Diversity.
“We’re standing with the state of #Maryland because this proposed detention center breaks the law and the hearts of all Americans who care about their communities,” said Laurel Jobe, an attorney at the Center for Biological Diversity.
The agencies are violating federal law by failing to conduct the required environmental review, involve the public or consult with the state.

We took legal action today to support Maryland’s lawsuit to stop the Trump admin’s unlawful construction of a massive federal immigration detention center.
The lawsuit challenges the purchase of a warehouse by Homeland Security and ICE to convert it into a detention facility.

If the administration can twist "national security" into an excuse to ignore the #EndangeredSpeciesAct, it sets a dangerous precedent for imperiled species — and our ability to fight for them.
We're not going to let that happen.
Next week's meeting of the Endangered Species Committee, aka Extinction Committee, is designed to approve an oil industry exemption in the Gulf.
Never before has a defense secretary tried to use national security as an end run around the #ESA. And Hegseth knows the claim is utterly bogus.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is invoking "national security" to justify running roughshod over crucial wildlife protections in the Gulf.
So today, we're in court to fight it.
Please help us stop this cruel, cynical scheme by giving now to the Freedom Defense Fund.
Thank you so much! It was a long road.

We cover glyphosate and chemicals in our food, why a new Trump Executive Order to expand production alarms health and environmental advocates, and how pesticide overuse is harming biodiversity and communities w/ @biologicaldiversity.org.

The DOJ argues it can bypass all other requirements set forth in the law governing the Endangered Species Committee process for considering an exemption at the March 31. meeting, and that the meeting itself will be nothing more than a formality to exempt #OilAndGas activities.
The filing explains that Hegseth intends to exempt all oil and gas activities in the Gulf because of “national security” concerns. It’s the first time in the 53 year-history of the #ESA that the Secretary of Defense has ever attempted to exempt an activity based on national security grounds.
Aerial photo of a Rice's whale in the Gulf of Mexico. Text over the image reads: “It’s tragic that the Rice’s whale, which has lived in this planet’s oceans for millions of years, could now go extinct because of a small man’s petty indifference.” The quote is by Brett Hartl, Government Affairs Director.
Last night, the Trump DOJ filed its opposition to our motion for a temporary restraining order that seeks to prevent the Endangered Species Committee from meeting on March 31 to approve a Gulf oil exemption.
This would put Rice’s whale in grave danger of extinction.

Nestled on the Gulf of Mexico shore in #Texas, the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge is home to some of the country's most critically #EndangeredSpecies.
But Fish and Wildlife is considering handing over 712 acres of this precious refuge to #SpaceX.

“Endangered birds, fish and other animals desperately need these wild places. The sensitive habitats that Las Cienegas was created to protect are being trashed, not just by cows but also by federal incompetence,” said Chris Bugbee, #Southwest conservation advocate at the Center.
Field surveys by Center biologists in 2025 found cattle causing moderate or significant damage along 78% of critical habitat stream miles in the conservation area, including where cattle are not allowed.
#EndangeredSpecies named in today’s notice include northern Mexican garter snakes, Western yellow-billed cuckoo, southwestern willow flycatcher, Chiricahua leopard frog, Gila chub and Gila topminnow.

We won't let unauthorized cattle grazing trample out these species!
We just filed notice of intent to sue the BLM and Fish and Wildlife over unauthorized cattle grazing damage to endangered wildlife habitat in Las Cienegas National Conservation Area in #Arizona.

These sharks are designated as globally critically #endangered.
They're also designated as a “prohibited species” in FL, which means no one may harvest them from state waters. If one ends up on an angler’s line, they must be carefully released. Removing a shark fin is also a federal crime.
“I firmly believe that someone who has information about this horrific act will step forward and help bring the offender to justice. Floridians don’t mess around when it comes to our precious marine life,” said Elise Bennett, our Florida and Caribbean director.

The FWC has offered a $1,000 reward, and now we're boosting the amount by $4,000.
