Each week this month, I'm sharing a blog I've written about careers in international development. This week: Movies I recommend if you want to do international aid work, foreign affairs or journalism abroad. Post your additions in the comments on the blog:

He wants to send our Afghan allies, people who kept US forces safe, who risked their lives & those of their families & were PROMISED we would be there for them, to Congo.
Why would any country EVER ally with the USA, knowing this is how they will likely be treated?
& my reward for my annual criticism of the Independent Sector is that they block me on social media. I think it's a great organization, except for this annual "Here is the value of volunteers!" campaign.
Here's a much better way to value volunteers:

It can demoralize paid staff, who wonder if their paid jobs are in danger, since involving volunteers supposedly "saves so much money" (in NOT paying them for work). It distracts from the far better reasons to reserve certain tasks & roles for volunteers.

Focusing so much on the dollar value encourages financial supporters & others to ask why there are ANY paid staff, & encourage layoffs. It causes friction with staff paid by the hour less than what a volunteer is supposedly worth.

The Independent Sector @independentsector.bsky.social has released its annual update of the financial value of a volunteer hour. &, like always, nonprofits & others across the USA will use it as THE indicator of why to involve #volunteers. Which is such a lousy idea for oh-so-many reasons.

So this is the tour of Spamalot we're talking about - you haven't undertaken Viking raids, have you? HAVE YOU?!?
How well do you know the tools that are used to build safe, affordable Habitat for Humanity homes? Take the quiz to find out.
I got 5 out of 6. Which is better than I expected, but I think I'll stick to marketing & advocacy.

More evidence that Biden was the best President of my lifetime on everything except the once-in-a-generation task—punishing Trump 45’s criminal regime—on which he utterly failed, and which renders his overall presidency a dismal failure.
The failure of Kevin Warsh to be able to state President Biden won the 2020 election or that President Trump lost the 2020 election is proof enough that Wash is unwilling to go against President Trump's dictates and independently do what is best for the nation's economy.
"You didn't pander to sensitive boys enough", from the same people that will write "Wokeness: pandering to sensitive minorities?" stories.
Palantir touts its human rights policy. But its tools help ICE run dragnet raids, detain people with no criminal record, and retaliate against protesters. Legal boilerplate is not human rights due diligence. www.eff.org/deeplinks/2...
Ya'll need to be following the @mississippifreepress.org . Don't matter if you are from Mississippi or not (I'm not). The reporting is outstanding. And what they are reporting is under-reported elsewhere.
OPINION: "During the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of people covered by Medicaid rose month after month—an unusual pattern for the government’s insurance program for people with low incomes and disabilities," Aparna Soni writes.

When Donald Trump gave Live Nation-Ticketmaster the green light to keep overcharging fans, guess who stepped up?
State Attorneys General. Jurors. Everyday people who are tired of getting scammed by giant companies.
This is how we win.
OMG you are both so cute.
Thank YOU for all you do.
everyone with real American manliness and a basic knowledge of military history knows that serious war efforts have never been derailed by such trifling matters as "communicable diseases"
We are about a week past Sam Bankman-Fried's deadline to declare who has been helping him write his “pro se” briefs. No filing has appeared on PACER.
At the #PENLitAwards, we asked Tony award-winning playwright David Henry Hwang, one of the night's star presenters, for his perspective on writing in the age of generative AI. He spoke up for the irreplaceable value of the "human lens." Share your thoughts in the comments.

And for anyone who wants to completely marinate in how much Epstein stuff has been known and documented since 2014, read Heather Marsh on Patreon for the in-depth writing. Use those hyperlinks in this capstone article. Mind boggling.

Called repeatedly, talked to many people, yelled (but never cursed or insulted), even cried at one point.
And, at last, I got a $635 refund on an unjust $805 bill.
The refund will cover a few therapy sessions to get over this.
I try to do this in staff meetings. I fail sometimes, but I do try. It's not just about kindness or respect - knowing what others are doing helps me do MY job better.
Bachelet’s pitch is the cause of urgent hope in a time that demands it. She is moving between UN languages—she’s old hat in these big multilateral settings, and she’s explicitly drawing on her experience as someone who’s lived through the violence of state repression
French polymath Clémence Royer was born 196 years ago today. Now she is most known for her 1862 translation of On the Origin of Species which pushed Darwin's ideas into the realm of human evolution, but in her day she was celebrated for her encyclopedic knowledge.

"Men can't see the mess." "Women are better at chores." These myths position women to take on more emotional thinking, says researcher Leah Ruppanner. She shares what works to reclaim your headspace. n.pr/48hkWLT
In 2002 a 17 year old from Londrina, Brazil boarded Jeffrey Epstein’s private jet in Paris and was trafficked to New York. Around 30 girls were on that flight. Ghislaine Maxwell prowled the cabin. Some girls sat on Epstein’s lap. The teenager was Amanda Ungaro.
