Ironically Vance identifies exactly why the current war is immoral. In no way does it meet the standards of Just War Theory.

Faculty warn of shared governance’s ‘erosion’ after portfolio review The portfolio review process did not include a faculty vote, reviving concerns over shared governance for some SU faculty members.

“There is a massive difference between faculty in their own departments determining that programs are no longer viable—which has been the usual way program closure has been initiated in the past—and such closure decisions being made solely by administrators."

Just published: a volume in honor of the great Neoplatonism scholar Paul Kalligas! I have a piece in it about Iamblichus and Proclus and how they read Plato's Alcibiades.

Writing Faculty Push for the Right to Refuse AI

Fishback is tapping into an increasingly radicalized generation of Republicans. In December, the conservative Manhattan Institute found that 31 percent of Republicans under 50 identify their own views as racist, and 25 percent say their views are antisemitic. For those over 50, it's only 4 percent for each. The same survey showed that a majority of Republican men under 50 think that the Holocaust either didn't happen or was exaggerated.

Seems bad.

Did women do philosophy in the Middle Ages? When we think of the periods in European history when women were able to do philosophy, the Middle Ages may hardly come to mind as providing favourable conditions for this activity.

Note to students: Your instructors may find an email with the subject line, "Dismissal Letter from Dean" a bit alarming and not immediately think it's a letter from the Dean of Students about your trip to represent the university in competition.

"Dow 50,000" Sound Nice. Until Justin Wolfers Shows You That U.S. Markets Are Coming 21st Out of 23. What does “Dow 50,000” actually tell you—anything about the economy, or just that a number got bigger? Dow 50,000 is a milestone, not a measurement. The level of the Dow is basically arbitrary: it’s…

The Dow was at 43,488 when Trump took office. It just hit 50,000.

So if you had invested $43,488 in the US, you would now have $50,000. But if you had invested the same amount in the rest of the world, you would now be worth $60,000.

‘First feline’ Larry marks 15 years as Britain’s political top cat Larry the cat is marking 15 years as Britain’s Chief Mouser at 10 Downing Street, a symbol of stability in turbulent political times.

Larry the cat celebrates 15 years as the British government’s official rodent-catcher and unofficial first feline, a reassuring presence who has served under six prime ministers. Sometimes it seems like they have served under him.
