I think I'm going to run an affinity publisher experiment soon to see if it's got what I need
Reading CanCam magazine. This one is so fun.
You can download the phone-friendly and print-friendly versions on [itch.io](http://itch.io) in my bio.

This project was so I could feel a little more at home in the zine community here in Toronto. It also feels like a good outlet for my gaming habits. Once again, I’m inspired by bloggers like @gaminginyellow, who create physical media out of their time playing games.
Inspired by physical media, I created my first 8-page zine. I rewrote six of my video game reviews to bring them together as a recommendation zine. The twist is that the recommendation is less about which game to play and more about how to enjoy it. Think of it as a pairing menu.

Yes, exactly. To be on social media to connect with people online about things you are interested in discussing vs. doomscrolling. Try @surf.social. Perk: you can have a feed just for Decoder there too, check it out in the featured feeds.

The issue theme even extends to the fashion shoot, with the model playing games as they pose.
The story here is partially about 3D printing, so why not use a little blue and red in the stroke lines and offprint them a little to remind people of nostalgic 3D.
How to keep a human engaged in a story about a toy? Include a human interacting with the toy. Go ahead. Imagine that’s your finger.
Issue 1049 is about toys. How to make a grid post more toy-like? Ever made a model kit? You’ll recognize these connecting lines. It’s skeuomorphic, sure, but it really belongs.
Brutus picks a theme every issue and commits to the bit, which challenges the layout designers to thread the theme throughout.

As of the March 2026 issue, GQ is going from 8 issues per year to 6, which makes it a much easier magazine to keep up with when you read a lot of magazines. It also might just give the whole team more time to make each issue more unique and memorable.
The shift is explained in the Editor’s letter, but you can see it in just the layout. The header mixes standard header type with something more hand-drawn.
And you see this little bit of extra effort on just about every page. Chunky fonts mixed with liquid effects, obvious hierarchy but no obvious grid.
Notice how the numbers are black against the background, but white against the clothes? Someone had to click buttons to make that happen. A human hand had to draw the markup. Effort is appreciated.

This book is filled with good advice that might seem obvious, but you’d be surprised how many layuouts could be improved just by thinking more about the pull quote.
Jones highlights magazines he’s worked on, like Huck and Sandwich. (I’ll have future posts on both). But for the purpose of this post, I just want to highlight how well Josh sings its praises, which is never easy with your own work.
Just seeing a page like this is inspirational. It’s so stark and cute. Like, yes, please, come help me design this. I need you.
Sometimes you need some simple advice about a big topic like a publication you run yourself. This one has been helpful to me.
