I think that I will make the sci-fi tech loosely coupled to the backbone of the plot & characters to avoid this.

Love The Foundation series, and that is an excellent point. I'm watching the series on Apple. Trying to like it but they went way off the path with the characters and plot. Will hold my thoughts on that till season 3 comes out.

I'm starting my sci-fi novel. The problem I'm confronting is the book setting is maybe 2-300 years into future. Tech moves so fast. I'm afraid my sci-fi stuff will be "old school" by the time I publish! It would end up being like an older movie when they pull out a tiny flip phone. Don't want that!

Legends speak of a shiny yellow orb that warms the skin and casts light upon the land. I scoff at these legends.

Here's a snippet from The Descendant. It shook me up a bit when I wrote it. Backstory, main character wants to die and is hanging above a 1,000 foot drop to her death.

"She was tired. She closed her eyes, and she could see his face. He smiled and it filled her with warmth. She let go."
