@vtanger.bsky.social If there was an Oscars for headlines this should be nominated

We're coming up to a year since I sent this letter to my executive board and I will resend it on or close to the year mark with even more international and national support against AI.
Thank you!

“Now the company has announced ‘c. ai Books,’ a bizarre feature designed to turn books into ‘choose your own adventure’ novels.”
Good overview if you’re trying to understand the concerns with the governor’s social media legislation by @ampressman.bsky.social, featuring comments by @evangreer.bsky.social and even some parent advocates with questions:

Enjoyed the thoughtfulness of this piece and also enjoyed “for Wired to suggest anything otherwise is disgusting”
I wonder if some leftists and liberals will pay attention to this. I've seen folks overly praise Rightwing organizing as if it is not subject to the same social forces and interpersonal dynamics as Left organizing. In fact it is: we often just don't have the same visibility into their groups.
“The DOE is exposing kids to AI without any protection, let alone real understanding of impact on student learning, privacy, emotional health, equity or algorithmic bias. This is a reckless decision, making children guinea pigs when we should be acting carefully and judiciously.” - Zephyr Teachout

Still quietly getting my bearings on this topic, but this piece of it is an important no-brainer. The MA Data Privacy Act should have been passed first, before we got to the social media issue, and second best thing would be to pass it now.
As someone with a long career being proven right on things, I am
least looking forward to being proven right on this one. That said, proud to be one of the authors of this letter and I
hope you’ll sign on
Absolutely because if we had any functioning guardrails whatsoever, this whole product would have been shut down long ago
BREAKING: Maryland is about to become the first state in the nation to ban the use of surveillance data and dynamic pricing at grocery stores.
The Maryland House has just passed the Protection from Predatory Pricing Act.
Governor Wes Moore plans to sign the bill.
Happy to talk to you!
AI and the classroom: for me this summed up the entire argument
Stalls would have been lovely! No, here you just order on a screen with a clone of UberEats on it. After 20 minutes someone puts a bag of food with your name on it on a rack, and you take it and eat it on a bench.
If you’ve ever sat in an airport food court and thought, this isn’t dystopian enough: you’ll love the new restaurant Wonder
When I tell students that sleeping with your phone in your bed is a sign of addiction, very wide-eyed expressions wash over their faces. It’s the most sincere tell that they are thinking and reflecting on their own values and behaviors, realizing how normalized it’s become to sleep with surveillance
I can't tell you how disappointing this is in a single post, so for those who choose to resist talk of inevitability, here's a resource:
WIN: The court ordered the Trump Admin to temporarily halt the federal government's illegal attempt at strong-arming schools into sharing students' private data.
This decision makes it clear: Trump can't threaten higher ed institutions into providing student data within their rushed timeframe.

Chinese government decides to regulate AI from the right to personal likeness, child safety and addiction angles.

But I was told it’s here to stay and there’s nothing we can do about it 🤔
But I was told that AI was inevitable.
Yes and: cigarettes and other drugs are highly regulated! Regulation is not prohibition
We'd like to legalize marijuana.
"EEK! Potency limits! 1,000 ft from a school! Rigorous ID checking! Nothing that looks like gummy bears! Only eight companies can grow it behind bars with 24/7 cameras!"
We'd like 24/7 unfettered access to your children's brains.
"Oh, of course. Go right ahead."
probably more people will be blocking attie than ICE by the end of the day tomorrow.
“Mom, what were you like in the 90s?”
“Don’t worry about it”
this is turning out to be one of the onion's all-time classics
