We all have days like this
Depeche Mode knew this was coming
A full disc image of Earth, as seen from the Orion Crew Module. The planet is a pale blue, swirling with white clouds and glowing slightly lighter blue in place from reflected light. At lower left, a large brown landmass is Africa, with Spain and Portugal with twinkling lights where the planet curves. At top right, auroras glow in a thin green glow, just barely separated from the planet's surface. Earth is set against the black of space (pic: NASA/R.Wiseman)
More context on this #Artemis II image:
* This is the night side, lit by moonlight. You can see city lights in Spain & Portugal, & a sliver of day at lower right
* The Sun is entirely behind Earth, which makes it a kind of solar eclipse, but w/ Earth doing the eclipsing instead of the Moon:

I feel fortunate that my child got started on learning a language (multiple, actually) with Duolingo, but was then able to continue learning Spanish in a classroom, and recognizes the difference in the quality of learning between the two. These opportunities are scarce, and he was lucky.

I have heard some (USA) people grumble that it's a team of Italian-Americans, but if that's what gets a country newly excited about the sport, I'm here for it. You have to start somewhere.
I was at the Royals-Rangers game, which was already 7-4 before the Rangers pitcher recorded an out, and I thought surely that game would be the outlier for the day. Despite 24 total runs and over 40 men on base, it was somehow just an average game yesterday.
Just how many party balloons were there? 99, perhaps?
@petersagal.bsky.social had good coverage of this important topic on WWDTM last weekend
here's my 2026 bingo card
I knew I couldn't have been the first to think of this one.
This reminds me of social media posts where they scramble all the letters in words or leave out all the vowels to show that your brain can still read the corrupted text... which is true for good readers, but is likely something you develop _after_ you have the fundamentals. 3-cueing seems similar.

Good thing they made trades for multiple relievers at the deadline. π
All these years it never occurred to me that that funny looking arrow was supposed to be a paper airplane. I guess it makes sense. π
Did they run a whole meet during the banquet?
This was the first ska song I loved, and I recently got my 12-year-old listening to it. youtu.be/gmOmAuhAQbE?...
Reel Big Fish still makes me happy. They deserved more than fifteen minutes of fame, but I love that they were self aware enough to write this one: g.co/kgs/ZyyHtfL
I really enjoyed the Netflix Conan O'Brien special. The comedy was good, but his acceptance speech near the end was excellent.
Betty White as Christopher Walken in Fatboy Slimβs music video for Weapon of Choice.

Barn doors are bad, but I think the La Quinta hotels with saloon doors on the bathroom are worse.
As I understand it, the evolution went something like Margaret->Margie->Maggie->Mag->Meg->Peg
Not so different from Robert to Bob or William to Bill.
That makes sense. Those areas would tend to be more cosmopolitan and left-leaning than, say, Fort Myers or Daytona Beach. (Not that I think you'd have had a bad time in those places). I think the caricatures these days are probably from places like The Villages, which is like an alternate universe.
Interesting observations! Thanks for sharing. Of course, the US is a large country, and different regions, as well as different socioeconomic classes within regions, have entirely different ethos. The urban/rural divide is significant as well. I'm curious where you spent your time here.
In case you're looking around for your next boycott...
This just triggered a song lyric in my head that I'll bet you remember:
...and that's how I got to go to the prom with Geena Davis. But you probably already read about that in People...
I feel old and out of touch today. I took my son to see Minecraft, not realizing that there was a "trend" of people ruining the movie with constant screaming, throwing popcorn buckets, riding on each other's shoulders, etc. I gave up when I got showered with soda about 75 minutes in. π
