The US and Israel are bombing Iran. Anyone reporting it as “preventive” is engaging in propaganda, by definition. There is no interpretation of what’s happening as anything else than a crime.

You don’t have to like the Iranian regime to understand why this is bad.

I’m a huge believer in Arteta but recently have wondered whether the recurring mental barriers we struggle with don’t perhaps start with the coach? Is he the scared one? What is his responsibility here? Do coaches speak to sports psychologists?

What is antisemitism? And who gets to decide what it is?

Who gets to call what antisemitic is often a function of the politics of power. Nevertheless, we unpacked some of the mechanisms Israel lobbyists have developed to make it easier to supress Palestine advocacy supposedly on the basis of antisemitism.

Why is international law still not being enforced against Israel? By virtue of the architecture of international law, obligations are laid out in terms of what states must do. But as of now, most states are still acting fearfully, not wishing to incur the wrath of T...

BDS is a mechanism for enforcing international law — one which the ICJ, the General Assembly & UN OPT Commissioners have instructed all states to use to bring Israel's unlawful occupation to an end. BDS, far from radical, is a basic universal obligation.

Pirkis et al. have argued that one reason we might not have observed higher suicide rates with COVID was as a result of effective mitigation strategies. In my view our two results together offer support for this idea, & suggest that alcohol bans were an example of such a strategy

Our findings are congruent with global data showing (fantastic work by Ann John, @drknipe.bsky.social & others) that the COVID pandemic did not precipitate a marked rise in suicides despite expectations that it might.

To our knowledge, this is the first study of its kind from Africa.

Our results suggest alcohol bans imposed in SA during COVID-19 pandemic may have had a protective effect on suicide rates, adding to work of @kaibarron.bsky.social @tom-moultrie.bsky.social & Kathryn Chu who found similar associations with significantly decreased unnatural deaths & trauma admissions

Alcohol restrictions and suicide rates in South Africa during the COVID-19 pandemic: results of a natural experiment Background Alcohol use is a well-established potentially modifiable risk factor for suicide, yet few studies have investigated the impact of alcohol restrictions on suicide rates, particularly in low-...

Thrilled to share this paper based on my MPH research!

Before-after analysis of suicide rates in South Africa:
-no evidence of increase in overall rates during pandemic cf 2017
-significantly decreased rates when alcohol was fully banned, especially among men

Just as white South Africa depended on assurances from Western powers to maintain confidence in its apartheid regime, so too does Zionist Israel today. The logic of BDS goes beyond direct economic impact, extending also to psychological impact.

From Rick Turner’s Eye of the Needle (1972).
