NTEU members in the ACT supported by many more around the country have fought so long to expose the governance crisis at the ANU. We have achieved so much but I am still shocked by some of what is still being revealed about Bell and Bishop’s tenure.

Also, can media stop saying that a man 'vehemently' or 'strenuously' denies an 'accusation' - unless it's also accompanied by equal-weight wording that a woman has 'steadfastly' or 'bravely' made a 'report'?

I missed out on the chance of a promotion last year. My hopes possibly pushed further out b/c of whistleblowing etc. While some fellas get it easy, this has been my journey through academia. Ex high school drop out and cert III TAFE alum. Nepotism and cronyism has no place in academia.

There are allegations Bell requested minutes of meetings be changed, sought to change employment records, breached conflict of interest provisions, undermined the university's promotions processes, ignored professional guidance, used her seniority to gain advantage for Meares, and overturned the university's central promotions committee after it rejected his bid to become a full professor.

The Saturday Paper understands it was Bell's suspension that led to a heated exchange at a university council meeting on February 18, during which interim vice-chancellor Professor Rebekah Brown was yelled at by a council member and ultimately asked to leave the meeting. Chancellor Julie Bishop did not intervene and a complaint about the conduct was made after the meeting.

ANU Council apparently more concerned about reputation - theirs? - than potential wrongdoing. Surely stamping out wrongdoing is in the best interest of the university and taxpayers?! Far out. www.thesaturdaypaper.com.au/news/educati...

From war hero to accused serial killer: The unravelling of Ben Roberts-Smith The war memorial’s poster boy for Australia’s contribution to its longest war is now in custody, potentially facing life in prison.

Please remember the brave whistleblowers who risked so much speaking out against the war hero, now accused serial killer. And condolences to the families of the alleged murdered.

Leanne is finding it difficult to make friends at uni. She’s not alone An “epidemic of loneliness” at Australian universities is weighing on students as a vicious cycle of online learning leaves the campus experience less appealing.

I’m beginning preparations for semester 2. Without teaching support I could be forced to teach up to 10 tutorial groups/wk, in addition to doing all lectures. Lack of funding is forcing impossible decisions that don’t align with pedagogy, risking students. www.smh.com.au/national/lea...

The ACT budget will decide who gets justice and who gets put aside A landmark legal decision relied on an underfunded service.

ACT government governs for the rich, creating pernicious disadvantage that’s often hidden. Defunding and inadequate funding of services for homelessness, family violence, mental health etc is creating massive inequality and preventing wellbeing for all.

The official who headed Australia's Home Affairs department acted so recklessly and improperly, particularly in his secret dealings with a lobbyist and Liberal Party powerbroker, that it would be very difficult for him to ever work in the public service again.
That is among a series of damaging findings contained in a confidential report that led to the sacking of Michael Pezzullo as Home Affairs secretary in late 2023 but which the government declined to release at the time.

Have you noticed that all government incentives are aimed at those who already can? Those who can’t, unemployed, fixed incomes, low income workers get left further and further behind. Like another species almost. Economic apartheid.

Fuel costs drive COVID-like surge in demand for emergency relief Rising petrol and diesel prices are driving Canberra families to seek emergency assistance and forcing small businesses to consider whether to pass on higher costs to customers.

Let’s not forget those left behind in the energy transition. Governments making EV loans and incentives available to the wealthy defies the reality of who actually needs access to such technology.
