OK I understand more but yet blacksky spent big money and survived the attack. So there’s that. Yeah it’s a product choice to go for robustness or no frills economy class and you get what you pay for. I think that’s all I’ve really been saying this whole time.

And back to my OP: it’s the firehose that makes Bsky AT UX feel superior to masto’s AP UX which provides much less “reach” but the firehose is also the vulnerability of failure, and very expensive to propagate at five figures per.

Now that we know from Bsky team that outage was a “sophisticated” DDoS attack that “intensified” it should highlight the defensive nature of deconcentrating the network, and hardening feed providers with dispersal, not only to shield from dev error but more crucially against hostile actors.

Our team received a report of intermittent app outages at about 11:40pm PDT on April 15, 2026. They worked through the night to mitigate a sophisticated Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack, which intensified throughout the day.

Maybe there are 3 tiers of product offering for a hypothetical Hosted Atmosphere Solution?
1. PDS $
2. AppViewLite $$$
3. Full AppView with backfill $$$$
(Where $ is the number of digits for monthly costs, $1/$100/$1000+)

As I understand, and could be wrong, a true hosted Bluesky service would be tiered, basic PDS which would be dirt cheap but the appView and related infra would be a much more costly tier above. That cost is hard to pin down but I’m intrigued. But proliferating those builds out resiliencies for all.

Perhaps what I’m really grasping for is where is Bluesky managed hosting so folks can spin up servers without technical knowledge and ongoing support? Maybe that’s an important tipping point for deconcentration, to be most precise?

Tell me what it costs to launch a small Bluesky server? Gotta be way more tha. $150/mo.

In other words, reducing the cost of spinning up Bluesky servers will improve its resiliency, robbing fedi users of their opportunities to gloat.

The fedi is far more dispersed across servers precisely because it’s so much cheaper to spin them up. The main obstacle to dispersing Bluesky is that it’s very costly to spin up by orders of magnitude. But that cost is what delivers the experience that most people prefer, less resiliency, better UX.

The same reason why Bluesky is vulnerable to outages is the same reason why Bluesky provides *reach* whereas Mastodon is vulnerable to valid criticism because its architecture does not provide the same *reach* but it is invincible to network outages for that reason. It’s a paradox.

Every time Bluesky goes down Mastodon stays up. Just saying.

This is one reason why I suspect that slopulism of all types structurally tends toward being at least antisemitism-adjacent, even when the individual political elites who are pushing it are not themselves antisemitic. (Some of them might even be Jews.)

I am broken-hearted at the terrible news that my alma mater, @hampshirecollege.bsky.social, after 56 yrs, is closing. Its death is a victory for conformism, for corporatism, for higher education's dull love of hierarchy & status. It's a grievous defeat for imagination & experimentation.

The obvious answer here is that the student protest movement was broadly smeared as anti-semitic and aligned with terrorists, and a variety of institutions from government, media and the universities acted as if that smear was true, threatening, suspending, expelling and even deporting students.

Army survivors of deadly attack in Kuwait dispute Pentagon's account, say unit "was unprepared" to defend itself Survivors of an Iranian attack that killed six U.S. service members have disputed the Pentagon's description of events and said their unit in Kuwait was left dangerously exposed.

This is some of the most important reporting to come out of the war on Iran so far. And it's nice to see CBS doing it, i.e good reminder that bad leadership doesn't mean that every journalist there instantly stops doing their job.
