One of the primary ways democracies recover from rising authoritarianism is anti-corruption purges. That can temporarily unite left and right against illiberal forces.

Unfortunately, the two most recent anti-corruption campaigns in the US were scams: drain the swamp and Gingrich's nonsense.

This sounds like rent-seeking adoptables.

Since Star Trek 4, Klingon has been a formalized conlang that requires someone on staff to figure out what they're actually saying and translate it. So they have the text on hand.

It's so frustrating that I have to fill out taxes with a million step form. I made less than last year and 2/3rds of my income is tips so it's even lower now. And last year I didn't earn enough to pay taxes.

I should be able to write "Fuck capitalism" on a postcard and send that in.

She left, then went back, then left again, then went back again. At that particular moment, she was in the alpha quadrant.

Golden Crystallized Fruit

Kidian looked downcast, discouraged that, even though the dish wasn't an actual fancy gem, it still looked like one.
I quickly put the food away when I saw her trying to compare herself to it.

Oh Kidian, you poor baby.

It's when we all hold up our rings then shout out the name of the kind of labor we do until a beam of light comes out and forms that flying guy with a mullet.

But good for him if he has apologized and is making an effort to stop using it.

It's irrelevant if he uses it to refer to other groups, it has a different meaning for that specific group.

I can say my niece is "climbing around everything like a monkey" but the same words would be incredibly racist if I said it about a Black kid. Context matters.

Criticism is a fundamentally different skill from creation. Just like coaching is a different skill from playing or defense attorney is different from criminal. Sure there's some overlap but the best at one are seldom the best at the other.

Yes, fixing the timeline is what they're doing. Much like this C4 fixes my fabrege egg collection.

Again, it's a trade off over when you calculate potential entry vectors, timing, and what conditions you can attempt.

But there's a reason cosmonsuts had several days rations—and a gun—in their descender. Smaller area doesn't mean easier to reach by crews.

There are a few idiosyncrasies about the landing system that make it easier to predict where a soyuz capsule will land. Notably, it's purely ballistic really early in the process locking them in to a specific course. Astronauts can steer relatively later.

Prodigy clarifies that they don't. They translate to the preferred language of whomever is wearing the com badge. When they go out during the S1 finale, lots of the crew can't understand Janeway's English so they must've been hearing something else.

I had trouble petting her because she was moving around so much with her little happy dance. That feels like peak puppy behavior.

That's a horrifying thought.

A woman went to police with video of her being raped. They said they couldn't help because she looked like she was faking.

The problem isn't too little censorship, as the article implies. It's rapists and their cop-enablers.

I feel like a woman who plans a rainbow party encoded with subliminal messages for her boyfriend doesn't really need advice from a chatbot to get him to marry her?

She can just say she's the greatest girlfriend in history citing that. Even if she's a praying mantis, he'd be a fool to not ring her.

Incidentally, all those explosions are why those descent modules aren't particularly reusable. We didn't re-use Apollo capsules but some of the newer descent modules with splashdowns hope to be reusable someday. And the SRBs were reused, but they didn't get as far up before falling.

Oh, yeah, there's nothing like that. It'd burn up on re-entry then get crushed anyway.

They explode the heat shield off the bottom then a gamma ray detector fires rockets. It's like if Michael Bay designed a landing system.

It's really only viable because the US has a big enough navy that we can assign a carrier group and a half to a project like this.

Missing is one of the bigger issues with water landings. I know that sounds crazy because the ocean is quite large but you have a finite amount of time to recover it and specifics of re-entry can put you hundreds of miles off course.

The landing gear they use are a set of solid rocket boosters attached to an altimeter. It's very heavy and the deceleration borders on the edge of what humans can tolerate.

On the bright side, it has fewer ways it can fail.

While true, there are limits to how much asymmetry is tenable. The US has thousands of police forces plus 50 national guards and the military not to mention paramilitary forces like the FBI, ICE, and CBP.

A popular uprising in the US would be harder than anywhere else on earth.

The issue is that you don't just send a single boat. Apollo 16 had 11 ships involved in recovery including an aircraft carrier. I can't imagine the US would have been thrilled with a Soviet carrier strike group being in Cuba.

It is but that's not an important factor. Compared to re-entry temperatures, the ocean, the ground, a frozen lake, or the inside of an oven are all similarly cold.
