I would say that if you're middle aged and not living in Texas, ask your doctor now whether you should get a booster. Don't wait till it gets to your state and there's some rush on vaccines.

Why Techdirt Is Now A Democracy Blog (Whether We Like It Or Not) While political reporters are still doing their view-from-nowhere “Democrats say this, Republicans say that” dance, tech and legal journalists have been watching an unfortunately recogn…

Wrote up something about Techdirt's recent coverage, and why (whether we like it or not) we need to be a "democracy blog" now, rather than just a "tech" blog (not that we've ever been just a tech blog).

This story is *the* story and it impacts everything else.

Bad Internet Bills All of the bad internet bills. One website.

Gutting Section 230 would HELP giants like Meta & Google, who can afford armies of lawyers. It would devastate community-driven alternatives like Blueksy & Mastodon, and would enable widespread censorship.

Want to hurt Big Tech? Pass strong privacy and antitrust legislation.

48 Scientific Societies Representing Almost 100,000 Scientists Ask Congress to Protect the Future of Science 48 scientific societies representing almost 100,000 scientists signed on to a letter asking Congress to protect the future of science

Today, a broad coalition of scientific professional societies who represent over 92,000 scientists are speaking out against the politicization and demonization of Federally funded science and government scientist jobs.

It was an honor to help the Union of Concerned Scientists with this! 🧪🌎

Weather and climate data shown on this website and countless others are at risk.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is the U.S. agency responsible for global weather forecasting, hurricane prediction, ocean observation, and many other services vital to public safety. Its satellites, supercomputers, and research teams provide essential data that help us understand our planet and protect lives.

On February 27, the new U.S. administration initiated mass firings at NOAA. These actions are unethical and deeply disruptive to the talented scientists and engineers who dedicate themselves to the public good. The firings, along with expected budget cuts, have serious implications for the availability and quality of weather forecasts produced by the United States. They must be reversed immediately.

Much of the data on this website is downloaded directly from NOAA's servers. In this environment of uncertainty, access could be disrupted at any time. While I'll strive to keep all features on this website functional and switch to alternative data sources if necessary, some datasets have no substitute if they go offline.

If this concerns you, speak up. Share on social media. And if you're in the U.S., contact your representatives.

All websites that depend on NOAA data should display something like this.

Seriously if I was like 20-25 years younger I'd be thinking of moving abroad for a bit. I just don't see how any of this works out in the short term.

Well, your country still seems relatively sane and normal, it's not quite the same on my end. I keep thinking I should move out of my deep red state before it's too late.

Warner Bros. released a box set of the entire series on Blu-Ray last year. It's reasonably priced, with extras.

Haven't spoken in a while. I hope you're well.

I just realized that folx who saw the Parable of the Sower quote earlier may not know about Octavia Butler's 2000 Essence essay, in which, she recommends these strategies for navigating the future she predicted after a male journalist had the audacity to misquote her! 🔥 commongood.cc/reader/a-few...

Please look up the influenza epidemic of 1918-19 to understand that the CDC not selecting strains for next year’s vaccines sets the stage for a public health calamity that will, without doubt and at bare minimum, catastrophically and directly impact people you know. This is a five alarm fire.

Listen. This is important. There’s measles going around. Measles is the one and only thing (that we know of) that can erase your immune memory. It causes immune amnesia.

You have to rebuild all your immunity.

Go to your doc and get your measles antibodies checked. You do not want immune amnesia.

To me, a Nazi salute means, "I want to murder your family." There can be no irony about it: It puts deep anger and hatred in my heart to see it done and I will never forgive anyone who justifies or minimizes it.

Josh Marshall of the Talking Points Member blog writes:

I want to state again what I’ve been saying since November: your health care coverage for Elon’s tax cuts. That is the fundamental fulcrum on which the next two years of American history — and quite possibly many years into the future — will turn. This has always been and will remain fundamentally a battle for public opinion. The issue is not “kitchen table issues” versus democracy. The two are fundamentally conjoined. Any effective politics to confront the current moment must join the two together. Because they are joined together. To the extent that “democracy” has no tangible impact on anyone’s lived experience, it hardly matters. But of course it does impact everyone’s lived experience in tangible and graphic ways.
