We reveal that interoceptive sensibility (self-reported awareness of internal body states) relates independently to both DP severity and self-face representation accuracy - highlighting deep links between interoceptive and exteroceptive body awareness, memory, presence, and self-identity.
Intriguingly, independent raters perceived these mental "self-portrait" images as looking younger and more emotionless than the individuals’ actual appearance. Could this be related to atypical multisensory integration, mirror avoidance, or the altered time perception associated with DP experiences?
How do people with depersonalization (DP) see themselves? Our new study in @cognitionjournal.bsky.social used a reverse correlation method to show that more severe DP symptoms are linked to highly detailed - but strikingly inaccurate - mental images of the self-face in memory.
