For our research group the quick IO and compression has enabled us to iterate and develop much faster. We just output to gpkg and gdb when we need to. In combination with geopandas It has made big geodata processing much smaller in my experience. Leaves ESRI far behind in the research space.

Nice piece of National Data Infrastructure. It would great if Australia invested similarly in its digital assets.

Overture Maps Explorer (Beta)

A question that has been crossing my mind the last few days. Are the Overture products better that anything the Australian Governments produce or pay to produce? Addresses no...but the road network perhaps?

Great to focus on a part of the globe where this investment will have significant benefit. Questions 😁. Will the underlying data that goes into these base maps also be openly available? Will Overture Maps be involved? Thinking GERS?

1. The people. Geographers have an understanding of the world that generally makes them good to be around.
2. The creativity. Creating code or a map is just good for the soul.
3. The value. Producing a product that helps people.
