Just a reminder that NWS is considered essential during a government shutdown. Meteorologists will still go to work, forecasts will still be made, watches and warnings will be issued, data will flow. We won’t be paid until the shutdown ends, but we’ll still protect life and property as always.

US Weather Service Merges Offices as Staffing Pressure Mounts The US National Weather Service will merge two of its largest forecasting units as it prepares for the loss of as many as 1,000 staffers.

National Weather Service employees were encouraged to take early retirements at an all-hands meeting Thursday. The union believes as many as 1,000 could leave in the coming months - out of a workforce of just over 4,000.

Another week of midnights in the books. Gotta figure out better habits when I’m working them.

Been writing long term AFD sections for a few shifts now. Issued first TAFs today too. Inner geek in me very proud.

I’m keeping a running upperair observation status page on my website.

I have additional metadata like reason for degradation, degradation type, when the degradation began, etc. In a coming update you will be able to read those things by clicking on the site.
