Our results suggest that Black and Hispanic students are affected more severely than their white peers. These students' math scores decrease by 0.052 and 0.075 std. dev. respectively. We find no differences regarding students' economic background. 4/5
Access to public libraries matters! Non-metro areas typically have fewer library branches per sq.m., and the closure of one can disproportionately affect vulnerable populations. Also, these areas often lack reliable public transportation, making accessing the next closest outlet more costly. 3/5
Between 2008 and 2019, 766 public library outlets closed across the U.S., removing access to the valuable resources that public libraries offer.
Library use decreases by 25-31 pp, and reading and math scores decline by 0.021 and 0.046 standard deviations within non-metro areas. 2/5
