European Airlines Face Fuel Shortages Within Weeks

Perhaps it’s time to speed up plans to get more trains running through the Channel Tunnel? I can’t believe it still runs at around half of capacity 😬

Here's hoping London's rules on dangerous SUVs mandates every one of them to dress for military service 24/7, just like they were intended. Not built for the school run that's for sure... #carspreading 🚸 @solveschoolrun.bsky.social @willnorman.co.uk

Shorter waiting times for green man at Bristol crossings "Reducing waiting times at crossings is a simple but important change that helps everyone feel more confident when crossing the road"

Pedestrians now have less time to wait for the green man at stand‑alone push‑button pedestrian crossings

Carspreading as highlighted by @cleancitiescampaign.org is a massive problem in London and I'm glad we and the Mayor are on the same page about encouraging the use of smaller less dangerous vehicles.

This one is signed as a dedicated ebike or escooter bay although I'm sure you could give it a go. There's plenty of M bike stands on the street also.

Social media graphic with statement from Caroline Russell AM on Vision Zero Action Plan 2 with pale green background and a strip across the top showing a diverse group of people walking, wheeling, riding a bike and using a walking stick:

“Collisions, never ‘accidents’, happen daily. They happen when people make mistakes. Whoever slips up, whether it’s a tired child scooting home or a weary person at the wheel of a car or lorry, the price should not be death or life-changing injury. I’m glad to see the Mayor and his teams understand that to achieve Vision Zero we need to create city streets where no one is harmed when, inevitably, mistakes are made.

“Too often there has been a culture on our roads where speeding, distraction and risky driving are treated as acceptable, when in reality they can have devastating consequences. It’s encouraging to see VZAP2 clearly challenge that way of thinking and recognise that changing the culture around driving has to be part of the solution.

“I love the new ideas for ‘hospital zones’ and ‘evening streets’ building on the success of School Streets to reduce road risk and improve air quality. I’m pleased to see that side road zebras, reminding drivers to give way to people crossing, will also be piloted.

“VZAP2 emphasises partnership working between TfL, the Met and the boroughs not only to create safer more inclusive streets, but also to provide support for bereaved families and crash survivors through effective collision investigation along with routine challenge of ‘fatal four’ offences: speeding, driving under the influence of drink or drugs, not wearing a seatbelt, and using a mobile phone.

“The Mayor's VZAP2 Plan has set out clear actions and targets, and what matters most now for Londoners is delivery. I will continue my work on the Assembly to scrutinise his progress closely and ensure that every policy set out is followed through and fully implemented so we can end the trauma of road harm in our city.”

So good that the Mayor’s Vision Zero Action Plan 2 is finally out – with strong recommendations on culture shift and reducing danger.

What matters now is delivery. I’ll keep pushing at City Hall to make sure TfL gets on with urgency making London’s streets safer for everyone. 🧵[1/7]

What cost-of-living crisis? 14.3mpg Cadillac Escalade V is now available in the UK | Auto Express Importer Clive Sutton is offering a range of full-size American-made SUVs to UK buyers, headed up by one of the world’s thirstiest models

No-one is safe with the height of that bonnet! Let alone children 😱 🚸

Incredibly dangerous, highly polluting and completely uneccessary in the UK. Why are we allowing these cars @heidialexander.bsky.social?

On a bus in traffic headed into central London whilst adverts of mega SUVs light up the sky, hosted by Transport for London. With bus speeds at a decade low and kids more likely to be killed by SUVs, should TfL really be enabling this @willnorman.co.uk @sebdance.bsky.social? Bleak. #carspreading

Traffic gridlock isn’t inevitable, it’s the result of policy choices - when weeknight Congestion Charging was in place, traffic fell. Cities across Europe make it easy and inviting to walk, spend and enjoy the evening, yet London’s night-time economy is being choked by ever bigger cars. 9/9

We need an action plan for the West End, beyond Oxford Street, including:
- Reintroducing Congestion Charging on weeknights
- More controlled parking with tariffs that discourage SUVs
- Reallocating kerbside to create more space for people and for essential use like loading bays and taxi ranks

Pedestrian Pound The Pedestrian Pound makes the economic case for investing in better streets for walking and wheeling.

We can support the night time economy. @livingstreets.bsky.social report found boosted retail sales in Shrewsbury by 25% compared to non-pedestrianised areas. London-based studies show a 17% drop in vacancy rates compared to unimproved streets. www.livingstreets.org.uk/policy-repor...

A lack of space for people, carspreading and too much traffic also means that 70% of all people killed or seriously injured in Westminster and the City of London are people walking and cycling. This can be prevented!

Traffic in the West End is being made worse by #carspreading - the rapid growth in the size of private vehicles including supersized SUVs - which means each car now takes up more road space, slows traffic further and increases road danger.

It may be surprising to learn there are no parking controls in the West End in the evening, aka free parking 🤯. Hours of control for paid for parking bays end after 6.30pm. It's no wonder our public squares turn into car parks and you can't walk down the pavements safely... 4/9

It won't be surprising to hear the Congestion Charge operated until 10pm on weeknights there was a marked drop in evening car entries but after this was removed, traffic volumes rose sharply again. Loss of revenue too - particularly sore for Londoners as tube fares increase again this spring... 3/9
